Joe Thomas – Three new signings to make first starts
Sean Dyche said he planned to make changes tonight and it makes perfect sense to do so. This should be used as a test-case for Bournemouth, a game of real significance given Everton’s start to the season.
Doncaster Rovers proved tough opposition at this stage of the Carabao Cup last year. With all respect, Everton should be able to make changes that blend youth with new signings and still come out on top. This is also a chance to rest important players who may not be quite 100% right now – I’m think James Tarkowski and Idrissa Gueye, who have both suffered minor issues this summer that I think have impacted their start to the campaign. Youth can also get a chance – there is no reason not to start Roman Dixon in a game that may give us another useful indication as to where he is in terms of his progress.
Up top, this is a chance for Beto to get some confidence against the team he scored his first goal for Everton.

Given Everton’s poor start to the season and the fact the club hasn’t won a trophy since 1995, there is absolutely no reason why they shouldn’t be taking tonight’s game very seriously, and what I mean by that is Sean Dyche playing his strongest possible team.
However, I think the reality will be very different, and we can expect changes. Jordan Pickford will no doubt sit this one out, with Joao Virginia given the nod. Roman Dixon will continue at right-back, with Jake O’Brien partnering Mason Holgate at the heart of the Blues’ defence.
In midfield, Harrison Armstrong could well be given his full first-team debut, with Iliman Ndiaye and Jesper Lindstrom also given the nod to start. And up top, once suspects that Beto will come in for Dominic Calvert-Lewin.
