Premier League club ‘express interest’ in Newcastle star Anthony Gordon ahead of transfer deadline

Anthony Gordon has attracted interest from another Premier League club ahead of the transfer window closing.
Gordon has been highly impressive since joining current club Newcastle United from Everton on a long-term deal worth £45million.
The English winger has been linked to Liverpool throughout the transfer window, but after confirming the signing of Federico Chiesa on Thursday, a deadline day bid from the Merseyside club seems unlikely,

But now, another Premier League side has expressed an interest in signing Gordon.
According to The Daily Mail, Arsenal are interested in Anthony Gordon, but a deal will not be possible ahead of the transfer window closing at 11pm on Friday.
Gunners sporting director Edu is believed to be a big admirer of Gordon, leading to Arsenal weighing up making a move for the 23-year-old next summer.

However, Gordon is said to be very happy at Newcastle, and has entered preliminary talks over a new contract rewarding him for his impressive form last season.
The talented winger made 48 appearances for Newcastle United last season, scoring 12 goals and registering a further 11 assists.
His breakout season with the Tyneside club led to him being included in Gareth Southgate’s England squad for the 2024 European Championships, the first major international tournament for Gordon.
His talent attracted the interest of Liverpool, who reportedly came close to agreeing a deal with Newcastle which would have seen Joe Gomez move in the opposite direction , but ultimately it fell through.

“I’ve seen Anthony come back in a good place. Especially this past week, he had a really short training period before that first game,” Newcastle manager Eddie Howe said ahead of the match against Bournemouth last weekend.
“We put him in as he’s a difference maker, it takes the younger players less time to get up to speed but I think this week he has looked back to his best.
“I have been in the game too long to make those statements [on whether Gordon could join Liverpool].

“What I will say is from my part and the club’s part we will do everything we can to keep our best players but I am not a fortune teller.”

Anthony Gordon’s future remains unclear but there have been a major development as Liverpool pursue the Newcastle United star.
Gordon capped an impressive Premier League season with the Magpies by being called up to Gareth Southgate’s England Euro 2024 squad but minutes were limited for the ex-Everton man.
After a superb first full season at St. James Park, Gordon has emerged as a target for Liverpool and a deal was in place at the end of June that would have seen the Scouser head to Anfield.

With Newcastle needing to pass the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability regulations, selling Gordon would have balanced the books and The Daily Mail have since reported that a deal was agreed with Liverpool to sell the winger for £75million with Joe Gomez heading in the opposite direction for £45m. However, after deals to sell Yankuba Minteh to Brighton and Elliot Anderson to Nottingham Forest, the move was called off despite medicals being pencilled in.
The deal might have collapsed but Gordon’s future remains unclear with the 23-year-old still high on Arne Slot’s shortlist this year, with some reports suggesting the boyhood Liverpool fan might have had his head turned by the interest.
Nevertheless, in a major development, The Athletic are now reporting that Newcastle will attempt to secure his services by offering a new deal when he returns from his extended summer break.

Newcastle hope they can ward off another attempt to sign Gordon and keep their star player in the North East.
Speaking about Gordon’s future, manager Eddie Howe believes the youngster remains committed to the club despite Liverpool’s appreciation of him.

He said: ““He’s such an important player for us, we didn’t want to lose anybody.

“Why would we want to lose our best players? We fought really hard to make the right decisions. In those last few weeks (before the June 30 PSR deadline), it was very, very difficult.
“He’s an integral part of what we’re doing. I’m confident he is OK. I think you can only judge Anthony on what he has given Newcastle on the pitch. He’s been committed.
“We’ve had no conversations over the summer where it has been fractious or negative. He’s always been the Anthony Gordon who has given absolutely everything to Newcastle and I want to make that clear to all our supporters.”

Newcastle are reportedly weighing up the sales of five first team players ahead of the summer transfer window deadline.
The Magpies have added four new players to their squad this summer, although two are backup goalkeepers and a third – striker William Osula, signed from Sheffield United – isn’t expected to be an instant starter.
Former Bournemouth captain Lloyd Kelly has also arrived on a free transfer, but the Magpies are yet to sign a big-money addition.

They have launched three separate bids for Marc Guehi – the latest of which totalled around £65 million – but are yet to meet Crystal Palace’s valuation of the defender.
Eddie Howe could have more transfer funds to spend soon, though, with reports claiming that the Magpies may sanction five permanent exits.
According to Football Insider, the trio of Miguel Almiron, Jamal Lewis and Martin Dubravka could be all moved on as Howe looks to trim his squad.

A move away for Kieran Trippier is also surprisingly slated to be an option, with the England full-back named on the bench for the opening day 1-0 win over Southampton. The 34-year-old had, however, only recently returned to training from Euro 2024 duty.

And finally, transfer journalist Graeme Bailey claims that left-back Matt Targett could leave the club on loan this summer amid interest from Nottingham Forest.
The 28-year-old former Southampton star missed the latter part of last season with an Achilles tendon injury, and made just three Premier League appearances for Howe’s side.

One player that looks set to stay, though, is key midfielder Bruno Guimaraes.
The Daily Mail have revealed that the Brazilian is Newcastle’s new captain, having led them out for the 1-0 win over Southampton on Saturday.
Guimaraes had been linked with moves to Barcelona or the Saudi Pro League this summer amid a reported £100 million release clause being contained within his contract, but that clause expired in June.

A Premier League club has breoken a transfer record ahead of the the window closing this week.
The summer 2024/25 transfer window has been busy for Premier League clubs, with players such as Riccardo Calafiori, Joshua Zirkzee and Joao Felix all joining the league ahead of the new season.
Clubs outside of the top six have also been active in the transfer window, with clubs like West Ham United and Ipswich Town securing big moves.

And ahead of the window closing on August 30, one Premier League side has smashed another transfer record.
Midfielder Matt O’Riley has completed a move to Brighton and Hove Albion, joining from Scottish champions Celtic for a record breaking fee.
The Seagulls reportedly have agreed to pay an initial fee of £26million, rising to £30m with add-ons, to bring the Danish international to the club on a five-year deal with the option to extend for a further year.

The deal breaks the record for a fee received by a Scottish club for a signing, which was also held by Celtic and set by the sale of Portuguese winger Jota who joined Saudi Pro League club Al-Ittihad for a reported fee of approximately £25m.
Prior to selling O’Riley to Brighton, Celtic had rejected five bids from Serie A club Atalanta, with the highest offer believed to be £21.5m plus add-ons.
The 23-year-old scored 19 goals and contributed 18 assists for the Scottish club last season and was under contract until 2027.

Throughout his career O’Riley has made it clear that if he feels a team is right for him, he will move there regardless of the money involved.
Speaking ahead of his move to Celtic last September, O’Riley said: “I wouldn’t just join a club if they paid me a certain amount of money if the style wasn’t right. I’m not that kind of guy.”
O’Riley is the sixth signing for Brighton this summer, with Yankuba Minteh, who joined from Newcastle United, and former Leeds United forward Georgino Rutter, who commanded a club record £40m, the most notable.
Brighton will play Crawley Town in their next match, ahead of a Premier League clash with Arsenal at the weekend.

Anthony Gordon opens up on regret at Newcastle after ‘overstepping the mark’

Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon was anxious for days and had a “sick feeling” in his stomach after he “overstepped the mark” in April last year.
Gordon, who joined the Magpies from Everton in January 2023 for a reported £45 million, reacted furiously to being substituted during their clash against Brentford.
Having been introduced by Eddie Howe at the break as Newcastle trailed 1-0, the 23-year-old was brought off in the 95th minute – a decision that irked Gordon.

In fact, after second-half goals from David Raya [OG] and Alexander Isak helped the Magpies in their bid for Champions League football, Gordon ignored Howe on the touchline.
Almost a year on from those scenes at the Gtech Community Stadium and Gordon has opened up about the incident in an interview with the Daily Mail.
“We had two days off after and I just remember the anxiety,” he recalled.
“Nothing could get rid of it. I couldn’t really go about my day. I was horrendous company for my family. It was that sick feeling in my stomach. I’m passionate, but that was way overstepping the mark.”
He added: “Honestly, the days off killed me! Someone text saying ‘Are you training with the under-23s?’ I’m thinking, ‘What? No one has told me so, but am I?!’

“I spoke to the gaffer as soon as I came back in. I was so surprised at how he handled me. He basically said, ‘Whether you like it or not, you’re going to be a success here.’
“I did not expect that conversation. He understood where I was coming from. It was the insecurity of not doing what I thought I would. I regret it, of course, but the way the manager handled it, that helped me so much.”
At the time, Eddie Howe played down the situation and insisted he had no problem with Gordon.
“Anthony’s a passionate boy,” Howe said. “He wants to do well, but there was seconds left on the clock, and we wanted to get Matty on, because Anthony was holding his ankle.

“He just needs to control his emotions in that moment, but there are no problems.”
In another interview, Howe added: “From my side, there was 30 seconds left, and he (Gordon) was down holding his ankle, so I put an experienced player on the pitch.
“It’s no reflection on his time on the pitch (to take him off).”

A few days later, Howe confirmed that Gordon had accepted he was “overly emotional” after being substituted and apologised for his actions.
“He [Gordon] felt the need to apologise,” he said.
“A part of me understood why he acted like he did but you don’t want to see a player react like that because it looks like he doesn’t have the discipline he needs. If he had an issue, come and see me in private.
“That’s how I felt he should have acted but he’s a young player learning.”

Howe added: “He accepted he was overly emotional and apologised. We had a 10/15 minute chat and moved on very quickly.
“As his manager, I need to help him. His enthusiasm, aggression and motivation levels are very high. He is fiercely determined to do well and achieve.
“That is one of his hallmarks and strengths, and we want to embrace that – we love that about him – but in certain moments he needs a cool head as well. He just needs some refining around the edges.”
Gordon has been one of Newcastle’s standout performers this season, scoring 10 goals in 38 games.
