Newcastle United were expected to address their striker situation this summer, and they did exactly that.
The Magpies completed a £10million deal to sign Will Osula from Sheffield United, with the 21-year-old arriving to provide cover for Alexander Isak and Callum Wilson.

That deal was done instead of replacing Wilson outright, which would have been extremely expensive.
Given Newcastle United‘s PSR problems, splashing out on a striker was not feasible, even if there were forwards rumoured to be on Eddie Howe’s radar.
Newcastle were linked with Jonathan David
Back in July, Newcastle United were linked with a move for Jonathan David, who is one of Sven Botman’s former teammates.

It looked like a move away from Lille was on the cards for the Canadian striker, as he entered the final 12 months of his contract.
However, David would have cost Newcastle £40million, and he ended up staying with the Ligue 1 club.
Newcastle mentioned as a possible suitor for David
While £40million was too much in the summer, he could be available for nothing next year.
David still has not signed a new contract with Lille, which means he could leave the club on a free transfer at the end of the season.
And, according to TuttoJuve, Newcastle are one of the clubs that are in the conversation to sign him.
The Magpies have been named alongside Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and Juventus. However, TuttoJuve state that the Premier League clubs are at the front of the queue as they can offer the ‘unbelievably fast‘ 24-year-old more money.
Deal is unlikely as long as Alexander Isak is at St James’ Park
While it would be incredible to get a player like David on a free transfer, it feels extremely unlikely.
Even if Wilson were to leave and Newcastle still felt that Osula was not ready to be Isak’s direct understudy, David would be an ambitious target.
Given his talent, the Canadian would want to be a guaranteed starter. That would not be guaranteed at Newcastle United, as Isak is a ‘world class’ talent and the Magpies’ undisputed first choice striker.
The only way a move for David would be realistic would be if Isak were to leave, which is not worth thinking about at this moment in time. As it stands, Newcastle are trying to extend Isak’s contract.
