Newcastle United fans are torn about Anthony Gordon potentially playing out of his preferred left-wing position after Eddie Howe admitted signing a right winger is unlikely.
The 23-year-old England international has been tipped to fill in at right-wing as the club seeks to compete for Champions League places this season.
Newcastle Sources: Eddie Howe SACK update today after boardroom bust-up
Newcastle boss Howe has admitted that the club won’t be able to afford both a right-winger and a central defender as the club pursue a move for Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi.
Football Insider revealed (August 26) that the club remains “confident” of landing Crystal Palace star Marc Guehi before Friday’s (30 August) transfer deadline.
Newcastle United fans not sure about Anthony Gordon at right-wing
Since making the move from Everton back in 2022-23, Gordon has primarily played as a left-winger, scoring 14 goals in 66 appearances at Newcastle.
Given his success in that position, some fans are reluctant to see one of their best players play out of position.
Given it seems we won’t be signing a RW, I imagine Newcastle’s front three will morph into
Barnes – Isak – Gordon
Not the end of the world AT ALL #nufc

No right wing is a failure regardless of CB signing and there is no ignoring it. Only way to rectify this travesty? Gordon on the right with Murphy, miggy as back ups and Barnes on the left and call of up sanusi to be his direct backup… #NUFC

Has Gordon ever started a game on the right hand side for us? #NUFC

One of Barnes or Gordon must start on the RW if we aren’t signing a new one, couldn’t give a fuck if they’re both LW by trade, you simply can not continue to use Murphy he is evidently not good enough, nor is Almiron. Joelinton / Willock can easily cover LW if needed #NUFC

I’m sorry but Gordon has to play on the right for the entire season imo.
We can play Barnes on the left, use the willock/joelinton combination there or even play Isak on the left and Wilson through the middle… All of these options are better than playing miggy or Murphy #NUFC

#NUFC. Well that’s that on a Right Winger then…..I can only suggest the best way forward is Gordon RW Barnes LW…….
Unless we sell them both this week !!!!

Unless Howe can somehow integrate Gordon/Barnes onto that right hand side, Europe is going to be a tough ask with Murphy/Almiron.
Burn/Krafth/Longstaff/Murphy all played at the weekend, these aren’t the calibre of player who pushes a team to Europe. #nufc

If Guehi IS our window then Gordon needs to be moved to right wing and Barnes needs to be given his chance.
With Tonali back and Guehi we’d have a excellent first eleven.
Then it’s all about injury management. Personally I’d be disappointed if we only signed Guehi tho. #nufc https://t.co/APcr3yAPcp
