Newcastle United will be desperate to maintain the momentum picked up in last weekend’s stirring Premier League peformance against Manchester City when they face Everton at Goodison Park tonight.
For all the Magpies’ impressive points tally so far this campaign, they have faced claims that their displays had not merited their lofty Premier League position. But that certainly could not be said of the display in the 1-1 draw with Pep Guardiola;’s champions and Eddie Howe will want to see more of the same again.

After negotiating their Carabao Cup third-round tie with AFC Wimbledon with a forgettable 1-0 win, it’s back to league action today and what will be a testing game against Sean Dyche’s Everton. The Toffees also had a morale boost last weekend, coming from behind to beat Crystal Palace 2-1 for their first win of the season.

Howe will have largely the same squad available to him for the trip to the North West, but still has plenty of injury issues to attend to. Thankfully. only one is a new concern, with goalkeeper Martin Dubravka out of this one and Slovakia’s international games after picking up an injury in midweek.
Nick Pope was always likely to return in goal, with Odysseas Vlachodimos on standby after making his debut for the club in the second half against Wimbledon. That’s likely to be the only change from that Man City squad, with Alexander Isak still missing as he recovers from his toe injury.

Howe is hopeful that he – and signigicantly Callum Wilson – will be back after the international break when United host Brighton at St James’ Park. United have missed the Swede and the competition that Wilson brings to the squad. Longer-term absentees Sven Botman, Lewis Miley and Jamaal Lascelles are continuing their recovery, with youngster Miley in with a chance of a return this month.

It leaves Howe with a strong squad for Everton, with Sandro Tonali, Anthony Gordon, Bruino Guimaraes, Dan Burn, Kieran Tripper all set to return to the starting line-up after bench roles or complete midweek rest.
