Newcastle United endured a frustrating time of things in the transfer market this summer.

While PIF continue to stress that they remain ambitious at Newcastle, Eddie Howe did not see his squad strengthened significantly.

Indeed, club legend Alan Shearer even suggested that the owners had failed the Newcastle United manager, who saw his attempts to bring Marc Guehi to St James’ Park frequently rejected.

The hope, of course, is that not spending during the summer will free the club up to go big in future transfer windows. Having only narrowly avoided a points deduction from the Premier League in June for almost breaching Profit and Sustainability Rules, it’s a wise decision when looking at purely the financial side of things – even if hugely frustrating.

Now, some insight into the club’s spending power has emerged.

According to iNews, Newcastle’s position when it comes to PSR is now much healthier.

Still, the days of player trading are not yet over, having already sold Yankuba Minteh and Elliot Anderson this summer.

Those inside the club are said to be of the belief that Newcastle must continue to be agile in the transfer market, with sporting director Paul Mitchell demanding the club to be better at selling players all while exploring more untapped markets.
Newcastle will look to spend again in January

Treating the transfer market with an element of caution is wise. PIF, after all, were not thought to have been happy with the frantic business back in June that saw Minteh and Anderson sold in order to avoid a points deduction.

Still, just because there’s some measured thinking does not mean it’s all doom and gloom. In fact, the owners are reportedly ready to spend again in January.

That would be some way to recover from a difficult summer.
