Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer can’t contain delight after Leeds United promotion

Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer are looking forward to seeing Leeds United back in the Premier League. Daniel Farke’s troops capped a memorable season by securing the Championship title over the weekend.

Saturday’s 2-1 victory at Plymouth Argyle was the perfect way for the Whites to finish a stellar campaign, which saw them reach 100 points. United beat Burnley to the second-tier title after ending the season with six straight wins.

Twenty four hours after their title success, chairman Paraag Marathe ended speculation over Farke’s future by confirming the German will lead the club in the top flight. Farke’s position had been in doubt since the Whites secured promotion at the end of last month, with reports claiming the Elland Road hierarchy were concerned about his previous record in the Premier League with Norwich City. Farke still has two years left to run on his United contract.

The celebrations are in full swing in Leeds, with the city hosting an open top bus parade today. Speaking on the latest episode of ‘The Rest Is Football’ podcast, Lineker said: “It’s a big club as well, Leeds is a big club that should be in the top flight.”

Ex-Newcastle United striker Shearer echoed Lineker’s sentiments, saying: “Huge club, massive fan base, I love it, I think it’s great that they’re up, yeah.”

Promotion will bring a sharp increase in income for United, who will need be ambitious in the summer transfer window if they are to survive in the top flight next season after two seasons away.
