GiveMeSport were the first to report on Tuesday that Spurs have decided to hold off on offering Son a new long-term contract for the time being.
The report explained that the Lilywhites have instead simply decided to activate the one-year extension on the forward’s deal, which will take the contract to 2026.
Although the North London side have not ruled out offering their captain a bumper long-term deal, it was alleged that they are being cautious about committing big wages on the 32-year-old for the time being, given his recent niggles.
This information has been backed up by TBR Football, who say that the South Korean’s camp have been informed by Spurs that no talks are currently planned over a new deal.
The North London club’s dramatic U-turn is thought to have left Son‘s camp shocked as they were expecting negotiations to proceed.
In fact, it is explained that there was an initial round of talks where all parties were aligned, which is why Tottenham’s sudden change of heart comes as a surprise to the player and his representatives.
One does wonder if this decision to postpone talks with Son could have something to do with the reported talks between Amanda Staveley‘s team and Daniel Levy over a minority takeover of Spurs (The Sun).
It was revealed recently by Tottenham insider Paul O Keefe that for the moment, Levy and co want to keep the wage bill low to make the club as attractive as possible for potential investors.
If that is indeed the case, then perhaps we will see talks with Son’s camp accelerate once the investment money comes in.
