The Magpies were already trailing to goals from Tomas Soucek and Aaron Wan-Bissaka when Wilson was wrestled to the ground by Konstantinos Mavropanos when attempting to meet Jacob Murphy’s cross. Wilson protested furiously to referee Craig Pawson but VAR stuck with the original call.
Explaining the decision, the Premier League, via its official Match Centre account, wrote on X: “The referee’s call of no penalty for the challenge by Mavropanos on Wilson was checked and confirmed by VAR, deeming that the contact was not sufficient for a penalty.”
However, neither Howe or Wilson thought it was the correct decision on initial viewing.
Howe said: “Yeah I possibly do. It’s difficult for me to say. I’ve looked at it once and I haven’t seen it again. When I looked at it live I felt it was a really good shout for a penalty, someone might tell me different but I thought it was a good chance.”
