Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe made a worrying admission after the 1-1 draw at Crystal Palace – admitting that confidence is low in the Toon camp.
Howe was adamant that there was a lot of “good” aspects of United’s performance at Selhurst Park but he is not helped by a number of stars carrying knocks. The head coach will have to hold a roll call ahead of the clash with Liverpool and only has a couple of sessions to get things back in order against Arne Slot’s side.
Joe Willock, Joelinton and Dan Burn all needed attention at Palace for various injuries while Alexander Isak was withdrawn before the end.
Howe told Chronicle Live: “Joelinton has been carrying a shoulder injury for a while but I think he was OK. Dan Burn has not been training due to an ankle problem.
“But he did magnificent at Palace considering he has not really trained. The good news on Alex is that it is not a muscle pull.”
Howe found himself under scrutiny on social media after the game after Newcastle failed to hold on to a lead handed to them by Marc Guehi. Daniel Munoz’s last gasp strike dented hopes of a much-needed victory going into the clash against the Reds at St James’ Park in midweek.
Howe added: “When you come here you know you’re going to be examined in lots of different ways. We stood up to that really well until the end. It’s an absolutely devastating blow for us because we thought we were there.
“There was a lot of good from us in the first two thirds but nothing in the final third. We look a little bit low on confidence and we were lacking a cutting edge up front.”
