Newcastle United captain Bruno Guimaraes has warned that the Magpies can’t allow talk of a trophy drought to build up again in such concerning manner at St James’ Park.

The Brazil international became the first captain to lead Newcastle to a major trophy since Bob Moncur when skippering the Magpies to the Carabao Cup final victory against Liverpool earlier this month. For Bruno it represents success in the silverware stakes in his first campaign as team captain since taking over from injured defender Jamaal Lascelles.

Bruno is now targeting more success on the field and warned that 70 years was a ridiculous wait for a club the size of Newcastle.

Bruno said: “70 years without a trophy for a club is too much, especially for our fans who are unbelievable. We just try to give them as much joy as we could. I think we did it right and nobody can say we did not deserve to win on the day. It is my first trophy as a captain and my first trophy for this club. I am very proud I chose Newcastle United to be my team.”

Only 12 months ago, Bruno was linked with a possible exit from Newcastle as a £100m release clause loomed over the midfielder. But neither Man City or Arsenal followed up interest in the star and he signed a new contract on Tyneside.

Dropping a major hint at his happiness at St James’ Park under Eddie Howe, the ex-Lyon star spoke of his satisfaction at life under the head coach. Howe also takes the tag of the first man to lead Newcastle to a domestic trophy since Doug Livingstone who was boss when the club won the FA Cup in 1955.

Bruno said: “He is the best manager I ever had, what a guy. The team tactics were perfect. We won the battle in the middle and spoke about this a lot during the week. What a moment for Eddie Howe he is always there to help. He always wants to improve the players so I am very happy for him.”
