Tim Sherwood could not believe the “absolutely disgusting” defending he witnessed from West Ham United in the 3-1 loss to Leicester City.
Patson Daka slammed home a third for Leicester late on in Tuesday’s (3 December) contest at the King Power Stadium, before Niclas Fullkrug at least pulled one back.
The Leicester attacker took the ball off Max Kilman, who seemingly thought he was all alone, drove forward and powered past Lukasz Fabianski.
Speaking live on Sky Sports News [3 December, 10pm], Sherwood said of that third Leicester goal: “Absolutely disgusting defending. West Ham have thrown the towel in.”
Julen Lopetegui surely on verge of West Ham United sack
United did not deserve to lose by two goals at the King Power Stadium, but that is ultimately the way the game ended and Lopetegui is surely now done at the London Stadium.
In many ways, the performance and the scoreline work against the Spaniard. Even when the Irons put in a half-decent showing, they are still soundly beaten.
The one positive was Fullkrug coming on and scoring late on, but the game was over as a contest by that stage.
Indeed, the third goal came at a point in which, as Sherwood says, the Irons appeared to have just downed tools.
When that happens, there is no hope. The Hammers return to action against Wolves next Monday (9 December) and there is surely no chance of Lopetegui being in the dugout for that one.
If he is, the only man who will have questions to answer to is David Sullivan. Quite how this can be allowed to drag on any longer is anyone’s guess.
It is unfortunate for Lopetegui it has not worked out, but on the basis of yet another horrible night for West Ham, it is the only logical outcome.
In other West Ham news, Darren Bent shared a relegation prediction ahead of the game with Leicester.
