Newcastle got off to a flying start at St James’ Park and had a golden chance to open the scoring when Isak was played through on goal 12 minutes in.

However, instead of taking the opportunity to shoot he tried to play the ball across the six-yard box for an easy finish. It was cut out by Liverpool’s defence, which caused a dispute between pundits Neville and Keane.

“Don’t cross it! You can’t cross that,” Neville said on The Overlap’s live watchalong.

“No he’s got to cross it, he should’ve crossed it a bit earlier but he’s got to cross it Nev. It’s on his left foot, he’s got to cross it, “Keane replied.

“No it’s so close to goal, he’s got to shoot. He should put it on his right and shoot.” replied Neville.

Isak wanted to repay Newcastle fans for their pre-match display against West Ham, and he certainly stepped up against Liverpool.

There has been a lot of talk about Isak’s contract situation with talks postponed until the end of the season. Arsenal remain interested in signing Isak but he showed on Wednesday that his full focus is on Newcastle.

He is now Newcastle’s top scorer in all competitions after his superb finish against the Reds.
