Merson was speaking ahead of the clash with Nottingham Forest as he claimed he was surprised Arsenal didn’t attempt to sign the forward during the summer.

Eddie Howe’s side cruised to a 3-1 victory at the City Ground despite having been a goal down at half-time, with goals from Isak, Joelinton and Harvey Barnes.
Isak’s strike was his fourth in his last four games in all competitions, with the winner in the 1-0 victory against Arsenal among those goals.
This form has reignited suggestions that he could leave Newcastle, with Merson claiming the Gunners should have landed him before the beginning of the season.
The ex-Arsenal man labelled Isak “the missing link” and insisted he is exactly what they need.
Speaking live on Sky Sports (10 November), Merson shared: “I’m a big fan of this lad, I’m surprised Arsenal didn’t try and break the bank for him at the start of the season.
“I think he’s the missing link for Arsenal. He can do a bit of everything. He comes short, can get in the box, and spreads the game, that’s what you need when you’re Arsenal.
“At the moment they haven’t got that player who can make the runs to stretch the game, I’m a really big fan and I thought his goal last week was outstanding.”

Football Insider revealed on 28 October that the Gunners remain interested in Isak amid growing questions about his long-term future at St James’ Park.
However, while he remains a Newcastle player, fans are frequently left frustrated about the constant links with a move away from the club despite their ambitions.
Following Merson’s comments, they took to social media to refute his claims, as they labelled the former Arsenal man “disrespectful” and “arrogant”.
In other news, fans were left raging as “horrific” Ryan Yates footage emerged.
