Eddie Howe’s side defended awfully, so much so that even captain Bruno Guimaraes labelled elements of their performance as a “mess” while club legend Alan Shearer was equally as cutting in his analysis.
The wild fluctuations in form are so frustrating. It seems Newcastle can get up for the big games at home but lack the right focus for away games, which is a major concern in itself.
While Howe does deserve time to try and string some consistency together, it’s a real worry.

Speaking to the club’s in-house media channel, Howe said: “We didn’t defend well enough, simple as that really.
“The goals we conceded, we look back on and we cringe a little bit.”
Newcastle’s season will be defined imminently
Newcastle have some huge games on the horizon, starting with a must-win clash at home to Leicester next weekend.
Failing to beat the Bees in the Carabao Cup the following Wednesday would close another potential avenue of success and only increase the questions about where this team are going under Howe.
Losing at Ipswich just before Christmas, meanwhile, just isn’t worth thinking about.

Little about this season suggests anything will change. Newcastle probably will put in some good performances against the top sides, while they will seemingly almost certainly labour against teams with fewer resources.
That does not feel sustainable for a team who want to progress. It’s predictably unpredictable and it’s hard to see how it changes.
