West Ham release club statement confirming and sending well wishes to striker and his family
West Ham United striker Michail Antonio was involved in a road traffic accident on Saturday, the club has said.
In a brief statement, the club said their “thoughts and prayers” are with Antonio and his family.
The incident comes as West Ham step up their preparations for their crucial upcoming match against Wolves at the London Stadium on Monday night.
“West Ham United can confirm striker Michail Antonio has today been involved in a road traffic accident,” the club said on Saturday afternoon.
“The thoughts and prayers of everyone at the club are with Michail, his family and friends at this time. The club will issue an update in due course.”
Antonio has played for West Ham since 2015 and has made more than 300 appearances for the club. He is their all-time leading goalscorer in the Premier League.
West Ham face Wolves on Monday night with head coach Julen Lopetegui under serious pressure after a disappointing start to the campaign.
It was decided at a board meeting last week that the Spaniard will remain in charge for the crunch clash with Wolves, although the game is likely to represent his last chance.
As reported by Telegraph Sport last week, West Ham have discussed the possibility of appointing a successor to Lopetegui on an initial six-month contract until the end of the season.
