Newcastle United find themselves in a bit of a sticky situation heading into the January transfer window, with PSR issues threatening any spending plans.
Eddie Howe has been dealt a poor hand of late at Newcastle, with Callum Wilson’s injury right before January adding to the misery.
The Magpies are set to face Leicester City in the Premier League up next who have taken four points from their opening two games with Ruud van Nistelrooy in charge.
It’s not as bad as it may seem being down in 12th though, as Eddie Howe’s side are only five points away from sixth position and a European place.
And it seems as though Newcastle have realised they require additions in January, as a highly-rated centre-back is being eyed by the Tyneside club.

Newcastle have had their fair share of injury issues, with one of the most frustrating being the absence of Sven Botman, who has proved to be a big miss.
He’s on his way back now, but it seems as if the club have identified a centre-back as an important addition next month.

TEAMTalk have claimed that Newcastle are very interested in signing Benfica defender Antonio Silva and he could be allowed to leave in January.
It’s stated that the Portuguese club are considering allowing Silva to leave on loan in January and could include an obligation to buy clause worth €50million (£41.2m / $52.5m).
Aston Villa are named as big admirers of Silva, as well as Newcastle.

An option instead of Marc Guehi
Marc Guehi was the main target for Newcastle in the summer, but things ended up collapsing due to price and the Crystal Palace owner’s stubbornness.
However, it’s believed Eddie Howe is keen to add to his centre-back options and with a deal for top target Marc Guehi looking unlikely, signing Silva on a loan-to-buy agreement could be the ideal alternative.
The fact that he’s not been starting at Benfica isn’t a great sign, but there’s no doubting his potential and what he could bring to Newcastle.
Tomas Araujo, who is ahead of him in the pecking order is also attracting Premier League interest, and the Portuguese club won’t let both of them leave.
