Newcastle have been credited with interest in a forgotten Spurs attacker to bolster ahead of the January transfer window.
PSR issues continue to dominate any talks around transfers, but it’s clear the club not only need a new right-winger but another attacker able to eventually replace the injury-prone Callum Wilson.
With this in mind, this latest transfer link may tick a few boxes as a versatile forward able to play out wide or up top.
Brazilian forward on Newcastle’s radar?
Speaking on a Newcastle podcast earlier this week, respected journalist Ben Jacobs dropped the bombshell that there there is “some substance” behind Newcastle’s interest in Richarlison.
Jacobs said on NUFC Matters: “There is some substance to Richarlison and Newcastle, but the price is a big issue. Spurs have been adamant throughout 2024 that if they’re to entertain an offer, it’s £60m or more.
“Newcastle wouldn’t be looking at anywhere near that number given his injury record and form. If this were to develop, from Newcastle’s point of view, it would have to be around that £40m or £45m mark. Nothing is advanced or particularly concrete yet.”
The Brazilian arrived from Everton for an initial fee of £50m and it Spurs aren’t willing to let the 27-year-old leave on the cheap, despite his recent injury issues.
Richarlison an expensive risk?
Struggling for fitness this season with a pair of injuries, it’s not surprise to read that Newcastle would only entertain a move for the Brazilian if Spurs agreed to sell for considerably less than £50m paid two years ago.
His form also raises concerns for me. Despite clear talent and an impressive physical profile, he’s rarely shown the consistency required to help challenge at the top level.
If fit and available on the cheap, he could be a handy Callum Wilson replacement who is also able to play wide, but this shouldn’t be a priority for the club and feels unlikely unless they’d sell him on the cheap.
However, I can’t see Spurs – one of our ‘big six’ rivals who contested the takeover – doing us a favour anytime soon!
