Aston Villa’s poor Premier League form continued on Boxing Day as they were beaten 3-0 by Newcastle United.
Villa were already trailing to Anthony Gordon’s early strike when Jhon Duran was shown a straight red card for stamping on Fabian Schar. The incident occurred just 13 minutes before the break.
Alexander Isak then continued his fine goalscoring form when he added a second just before the hour mark before Joelinton sealed all three points for Eddie Howe’s side in stoppage time. And Villa supporters, commenting in the comments section on Birmingham Live, have had their say on their side’s latest defeat.

Commenter Mikecoolruler thinks: “Disappointing again, but hey everyone, do not expect miracles from Villa, remember we are still developing. They need to replace Diaby, pull in another CB and RB over January. Look, Duran earned the right to start yesterday after his recent strong performances, so Watkins has done nowhere near enough to ensure he gets game time, never mind having a starting position.”
Chosen in 1957 disagrees: “We shouldn’t have started with Duran today and his sending off was such a major blow to our chances of getting back into the game after that early goal. With 3 home games on the trot we need to put this defeat behind us . With the options of bringing in the players we need in the January window now within days of being realised and the priority is a class wide player , because as we saw with Anthony Gordon today its a great asset to have in any team .”
Samar11 states: “Thanks Duran you lost us the game, he needs to get rid of his arrogance and he needs to work harder, I’m not happy with him at all. He let the whole team, those travelling supporters and the manager down. Also I think we need Mings back in the team, he is a great leader never stops organising what we need.”
Claret & Blue verdict
Villian agrees: “A disgraceful performance from Duran. Until he can show basic self discipline he is a luxury the first team can’t afford. He not only cost Villa getting anything out of the match but the extra effort the 10 men had to put in will likely show in the January games as they had to use far more energy than they should have. Having to play Newcastle with a man short showed as the tiredness grew as the game unfolded.”
G81 thinks there’s more to it: “Seriously?! Can we please get a competent ref and VAR for a couple of games? Taking to one side the fact that the Duran incident was arguably not even a booking, Schaar then does a far worse version of the same challenge in the second half, which gets ignored!”
Taymil agrees: “Slagging Duran off for what was never a red card! The ref was a joke, how many fouls did Gordon commit and wasn’t booked? Poor goals to concede again, we make it hard for ourselves virtually every game!”
Crichy adds: “What about all the points Duran won us with his goals in the Premier League and Champions League? It was never a stamp, there was no force whatsoever in it. Disgraceful decision and VAR let us down again.”
Mickmark says: “You cannot compete against a class team with 10 men, especially for 60 minutes. Two of the goals were gimmes from our midfielders mistakes. Too many give aways when in possession. Overall a shambolic performance.”
