It seems crazy to think Newcastle United once had midfield struggles.
While that very much was the case at times, it seemed to be a matter of lacking balance than the personnel at Newcastle.
Indeed, the trio of Sandro Tonali, Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton are surely the envy of other clubs. All three are absolutely brilliant when at their very best.
The likes of Sean Longstaff, Lewis Miley and Joe Willock of course deserve mentions but it seems the Italian and the pair of Brazilians are Eddie Howe’s first-choice right now.
There had been doubts about whether Tonali and Guimaraes could play together even before the former AC Milan star’s ban from football. Upon his return, little seemed to have changed initially.

Joelinton hails Sandro Tonali as a “maestro” after Newcastle’s win over Aston Villa
Tonali took to Instagram after the game to caption a couple of photos of him in action: “Boxing Day with this team, couldn’t have asked for a better Christmas.”
In response, Joelinton hailed his teammate as a “Maestro.”
Given recent comparisons to a certain Andrea Pirlo, that felt brilliantly apt.
Sandro Tonali hailed as a “genius” for his role in Anthony Gordon’s goal for Newcastle
Anthony Gordon’s stunning finish for Newcastle’s first goal on Boxing Day will naturally take most of the headlines.
Still, former Lionesses star Ellen White hailed Tonali as a “genius” for his interception in the build-up to that strike early into the contest, further underlining what a fantastic decision it was to move him into the No.6 position.
Tonali is coming good for Newcastle at the very best time.
