Aston Villa director of football operations Damian Vidagany has slammed the “credibility” of referees following John Duran’s red card against Newcastle United.

Eddie Howe called Duran’s red card “harsh” while Alan Shearer also questioned the call on Match of the Day. Villa appealed the dismissal but this was rejected – with the 21-year-old now set to miss three matches.

They could now face further action following sporting director Vidagany’s latest comments on social media. The Spaniard lashed out after Villa’s appeal was rejected, although he admitted Newcastle deserved to win.
“Three matches for Jhon Duran,” Vidagany posted. “You know what? The most damaged here is not Villa – it is the credibility of the ones who made the decisions. We are going to keep fighting, nothing will destroy us and we will overcome all these unfair decisions. And we will behave like gentlemen.
“Hopefully, we will see every weekend if we can (put up a better fight). Also in midweek, I think easier for you to follow us Tuesday and Wednesday. (They are) not really busy days for you. By the way, you have a great team and played better. (You) deserved the win but it was not a red card.”
