Kieran Trippier’s Newcastle reaction speaks volumes amid Man United injury fears

Newcastle defender Kieran Trippier was clearly frustrated as he was substituted for Tino Livramento in the second half against Manchester United.
The Magpies were cruising at Old Trafford after two early goals in the first half. Alexander Isak gave United the lead as he powered home a close-range header following Lewis Hall’s cross.
It was 2-0 on 19 minutes as Anthony Gordon’s whipped cross, also from the left-hand side, was guided in by Joelinton’s header as he beat Lisandro Martinez in the air. The first moment of concern for Eddie Howe came in the second half when Trippier dropped to the ground after appearing to feel a muscular injury.
After receiving treatment, it seemed inevitable that Trippier would be forced off with Livramento ready to take his place. But, against the odds, the Englishman dusted off the injury and insisted he was alright to continue playing.
Keen not to take the risk of losing Trippier, Howe decided to take the decision out of the full-back’s hands and moments later instructed Livramento to come on. As his number was shown by the fourth official, a disgruntled Trippier appeared adamant that he did not want nor need to come off and looked to be reluctant to head to the touchline.
Any fears that this could blow up into anything bigger were quickly quashed though as Trippier shook hands with both Livramento and Howe as he left the pitch. It is clear that Trippier is eager to keep his place in the team having found opportunities harder to come by this season.
