While the Premier League is pretty much filled with talent from top to bottom, it’s out wide on the wing where the division is at its deepest. Some of the very best players in the history of the league were situated on the flank, the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale, Eden Hazard and many more, all possessing blistering pace, quick feet, and technical ability in abundance.

The current crop of players are some of the best we’ve ever seen in the position, including the likes of Mohamed Salah, Bukayo Saka and Cole Palmer – all of whom have impressed on a continual basis for Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea, respectively.

Some players are out of sorts, such as Jack Grealish and Gabriel Martinelli, and struggling to perform at a high level, but there are so many talented wide players in the English top flight at the moment. Club: Manchester United

In a period of transition for the Red Devils, what fans are looking out for are players who can grab the situation by the scruff of the neck and make games their own. Up steps Amad, a youngster who endured a litany of loan stints before making himself a regular in senior proceedings.

Often unfancied by Ten Hag, he always puts in resounding performances under the new management (irrespective of where he is deployed) and has notched six assists in the Premier League this term. From his match-winner against Liverpool last season to his last-gasp dink over Ederson in their recent encounter with Manchester City, the Ivorian has won the hearts of the Old Trafford faithful ever so quickly.

13 Jeremy Doku

Club: Manchester City

The arrival of Jeremy Doku in 2023 to replace the departing Riyad Mahrez was a transfer that excited Manchester City fans as the young Belgian was able to bring a new dimension to the Cityzens’ attack. His blistering pace and willingness to take on his full-back has solidified Doku as the first-choice left-winger ahead of Grealish at the Etihad.

The 21-year-old joined an exclusive list of players to have assisted four goals in a single Premier League game, doing so against Bournemouth. While he has maybe not captured the same heights since, he has still been a thorn in his opponents’ side this term and will look to build on his stunning strike in the 3-2 victory over Fulham.

12 Leandro Trossard

Club: Arsenal

With question marks over the recent displays of Martinelli, Leandro Trossard has been a more than effective replacement at the Emirates. Since arriving from Brighton & Hove Albion, the Waterschei-born 29-year-old has been nothing short of impactful in the Gunners’ pursuit of domestic glory.

At times, Arsenal’s number 19 has made clear his frustration when not chosen from the start. His muted celebration after coming off the bench to score against Aston Villa epitomised that. Evidenced by his sending off against Manchester City, Trossard has struggled to hit previous heights this term but his impact from the bench cannot be understated.

11 Mohammed Kudus

Club: West Ham United

Mohammed Kudus’ red-hot form since moving to the Premier League from Ajax makes everyone wonder why a club from the nation’s traditional top six didn’t make a serious move for the Ghanaian. Becoming one of West Ham’s talismen was not on the cards – but he’s made it look effortless while adjusting to the hustle and bustle of the top flight.

Strong in duels, unpredictable and a menace to mark, Accra-born Kudus has been a revelation in east London since his arrival. While his form under new manager Julen Lopetegui has not quite lived up to the electrifying standard of last season, that is the same for every Hammer thus far, so maybe it can’t be attributed to the winger himself.

10 Cody Gakpo

Club: Liverpool

For as long as Mohamed Salah remains on the red side of Merseyside, Cody Gakpo and the like will never be the club’s go-to men. It would be remiss, however, to understate the Dutchman’s upturn in performances since Arne Slot took over the reins from Jurgen Klopp in the summer – as evidenced by his season tally of nine goals and two assists.

There were, of course, glimpses of his brilliance under the German – but he’s now a constant threat who is capable of going either way under his compatriot’s stewardship. There is plenty of competition on the left flank among the Anfield roster but Gakpo, once courted by rivals Manchester United, is doing all he can to cement himself as a starter in a rejuvenated Liverpool side.

9 Bryan Mbeumo

Club: Brentford

Without Ivan Toney, Thomas Frank needed another member of his Brentford squad to produce the goods in front of goal, and Arsenal-linked Bryan Mbeumo has taken on that challenge. The only remaining member of the vicious BMW attack that also included Ollie Watkins and Said Benrahma, the Cameroon international has taken to centre stage expertly.

After seven Premier League games, only Erling Haaland had scored more than the 25-year-old, which is testament to how lethal he has been despite not being an out-and-out number nine. His form has tailed off slightly, but with nine strikes in 16 appearances, he is still in the top five scorers, hence his lofty placement here.

8 Anthony Gordon

Club: Newcastle

Anthony Gordon joined Newcastle in January 2023 from boyhood club Everton as an exciting youngster and his game has come on leaps and bounds since his high-profile switch. That said, the first six months he spent on Tyneside had many fans questioning the signing as he failed to nail down a regular spot in Eddie Howe’s first XI.

After not being allowed to really feature at the European Championships, Gordon has been forced to play more centrally for his club with Alexander Isak suffering with injuries. That has stunted the 23-year-old’s impact somewhat, but when he’s one-on-one with a defender, we dare anyone to try and stop him once he gets into full flight.

7 Luis Diaz

Club: Liverpool

If there has been one player fans would say has benefitted from Jurgen Klopp leaving and Arne Slot coming into the fold at Anfield, it’s Luis Diaz. That’s not to suggest that Colombian was bad under the German coach, but his form this season has at times been otherworldly.

Diaz suffered a long-term injury in 2022/23 which looked to have done some damage to the lightning-quick man on the flank, but he is seemingly back to his best, creating chaos on the left wing, while improvements in his potency in front of goal are evident, too. Sharing the load with the aformentioned Gakpo, the Colombian could have a massive say in the title race this season.

6 Jarrod Bowen

Club: West Ham United

While West Ham United have struggled at times in the Premier League at different periods, England ace Jarrod Bowen has been the stand-out performer for the east London club and has quickly become one of the best wingers in England – and for fans of his employers, his last-ditch strike in the 2022/23 Europa Conference League will remain a vivid memory.

Bowen has, much like Gordon, had the burden of leading the line under his new boss, which takes him away from his biggest strengths. Some might argue he deserves to be a tad lower, but that sums up the 27-year-old captain. Criminally underrated given that he has 65 goals and 43 assists to his name in West Ham colours.

5 Son Heung-min

Club: Tottenham Hotspur

On his day, Son Heung-min could have an argument to be even higher on this list. With Harry Kane leaving Tottenham Hotspur in the summer of 2023, the South Korean shoulders a lot more responsibility at Spurs, especially from a goalscoring standpoint.

On the wrong side of 30 years old, it’s unlikely Spurs fans will see the absolute best of the former Bayer Leverkusen winger again. The summer acquisition of Dominic Solanke has allowed Son to move back out wide and, being one of the most two-footed players in football history, the Tottenham ace can go either way and provide a serious goal threat. Something he has already proved in this campaign.

4 Phil Foden

Club: Manchester City

Although Phil Foden is often seen drifting inside and making a difference from central areas, the Englishman’s best work – arguably – comes from out wide with him able to use his deft dribbling ability to glide past players with what seems like relative ease. At the end of last campaign, Foden picked up the 2023/24 Premier League Player of the Season award, and he’ll be looking to make it two on the bounce this time around.

Recognised as one of the best players currently earning their corn in England’s top division, the decorated forward has slipped down the list, partly because of the form of others, but partly because his season has yet to really build up any steam as he has mostly been used as a substitute. City’s shoddy form hasn’t helped his cause either, but the team not performing shouldn’t discredit what he’s done in the last year.

3 Cole Palmer

Club: Chelsea

In the future, Cole Palmer could follow in the footsteps of his former teammate Foden and become one of the most exciting talents in world football. In fact, there’s enough of an argument to suggest he is after he became the only player to score four goals in a first half in Premier League history.

Eyebrows were raised when Pep Guardiola allowed such a talented youngster to join a rival, and those doubts have been proven right as Palmer has excelled at Stamford Bridge. After 22 goals in the top flight last term, the creative genius has picked up where he left off this term.

2 Bukayo Saka

Club: Arsenal

In terms of the best Premier League winger for the next decade, Bukayo Saka appears to have that locked down given he has years aplenty left in the tank. The 23-year-old has been mesmerising for a couple of years now, since bursting onto the scene at Arsenal, and somehow just keeps getting better.

His role in the club’s title challenge in two seasons on the trot cannot be overstated, and his influence on Mikel Arteta’s side going forward will be massive. His goalscoring numbers have risen every single season, and there’s no reason to doubt that this will continue. However, it is in the assists department (10) where he is storming away thus far.

1 Mohamed Salah

Club: Liverpool

Was anyone else ever really going to be number one? The ever-reliable Mohamed Salah has been in scintillating form since joining Liverpool in 2017 and has regularly been the best winger in the Premier League and maybe even the best in the entire world since.

His goalscoring influence on the team is unmatched and no one was quite as important to Jurgen Klopp’s silverware-winning side as the Egyptian King. Under a new regime, the 32-year-old has continued in a similarly rich vein, which appears to be leading Liverpool towards a title charge that not too many would’ve expected.

Even his disappointing seasons are better than most footballers at their peak. It’s hard to imagine Liverpool would have won quite as much if this man wasn’t in the fold. There’s no question he’s the best winger in England right now, and he puts together a compelling case of being the best wide man to ever grace the Premier League.
