A social media storm arrived over Merseyside on the weekend following a dig aimed at Everton by one of their own players.
Neal Maupay is no stranger to voicing his honest opinions and that is exactly what he did on Sunday following Everton’s defeat.
Sean Dyche’s side saw their improved run of form come to an end against Nottingham Forest who secured three points at Goodison Park.
And to rub salt into the wound, the on-loan Maupay took to social media after the game to share his delight in seeing his parent side lose.
There was considerable reaction to the tweet with John Lennon airport even hitting back at Maupay over social media
It has not been the most impressive of seasons from Everton with the Blues battling relegation once again
Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer reacts to Neal Maupay’s Everton dig
Darren Bent has told Everton to punish Maupay if he does return to the club over the summer from his loan.
It is not usual to see players speak the way in which Maupay does over social media with the Frenchman clearly looking for a reation.
Speaking on The Rest is Football podcast, Gary Lineker, Alan Shearer and Micah Richards have all reacted to the social media post.
“Just quickly before we move on, Neal Maupay’s tweet; just have a scan. I don’t go on Twitter anymore, but some of his tweets are really funny, and not just the one he said about Everton,” said Richards.
“Isn’t he still on loan? He is still on loan isn’t he? Oh my goodness me,” replied Shearer.
“How can he be doing that? It’s so disrespectful, but for him to do it, I quite admire it,” added Richards
“He’s not exactly Messi or Ronaldo, is he?” Lineker said.
That was not the only thing which the striker had to say as Maupay alluded to Everton being relegated this season to the Championship.
It could make for a really awkward reunion if he does return over the summer
