Newcastle are in talks over another potential January exit, with Championship side Portsmouth eyeing a move for one of our forgotten men.
Eddie Howe has improved a multitude of players from the squad he’s inherited, perhaps none moreso than Joelinton and Jacob Murphy while Emil Krafth has proved a reliable deputy when required.
The same can’t be said for many of the Mike Ashley era signings, however, as we look to sanction loan or permanent exits for expensive deadwood.
Newcastle midfielder in talks to leave
According to a report this afternoon, forgotten man Isaac Hayden could soon be reunited with two former Mags on the south coast.
As revealed by The Telegraph’s Mike McGrath, Newcastle are in talks with Portsmouth over a deal for Hayden, with ‘other Championship clubs’ also interested.
Should the midfielder leave, he would reunite with two former Newcastle men in Matt Ritchie and Elias Sorensen at Pompey.
After winning League One last season, Portsmouth find themselves wrapped up in a relegation battle – only outside the bottom three on goals scored, and are looking to bring in Hayden to help in their efforts to stay up.
Hayden in desperate need of a new start
Hayden has been shipped out on loan on three occasions since PIF and co. came to power on Tyneside, but it’s evident that he hasn’t a future in black-and-white and is in need of a permanent move.
His initial spell at Norwich was marred by injuries, while he fell out of favour at Standard Liege and saw his loan cut short.
The 29-year-old’s third spell at QPR transformed the second half of their Championship campaign, offering a dominant force in the middle of the park, but he didn’t sign permanently in the end.
There are plenty of parallels with QPR’s situation last season and Pompey’s this time round. If a deal can be agreed with the south coast outfit, this may well be the perfect fit for Hayden to find a fresh start.
