RANGERS will face controversial Bosnian ref Irfan Peljto in Bilbao – for the first time since his Champions League handball shocker against Connor Goldson.

Peltjo penalised Gers centre-back Goldson in the 2-0 qualifying loss to Union St Gilloise in Belgium three years ago.

He was sent to the pitchside monitor by the VAR to reconsider his call as the ball had struck Ben Davies and bounced on to Goldson’s arm.

But Peljto stuck to his on-field call and USG scored from the spot for a 2-0 home win, albeit Gers overturned it at Ibrox.

Peljto was exposed to widespread ridicule over the decision, which flew in the face of the handball rule on ricochets.

Gers great Ally McCoist said: “It was an absolutely terrible decision.

“Are these people for real? You’re looking at it and who in their right mind thinks that’s a penalty?

“It baffled me, absolutely baffled me.

“If he’d seen it in normal time and given it, I’d have given him a bit more space and leeway.

“But when you go over to a monitor and look at, and still give it? It’s mental.”

Peljto, 40, sent off Celtic pair Gustaf Lagerbielke and Odin Thiago Holm during last season’s 2-0 Champions League defeat to Arne Slot’s Feyenoord in the Netherlands.

He was also in charge of the Hoops’ 0-0 draw at Atalanta this season – and Arsenal’s Champions League win over Real Madrid at the Emirates last week

He will now take charge of the Europa League quarter-final second leg between Gers and Athletic Club in Spain on Thursday night.
