New Everton manager David Moyes is adamant that he can succeed again with the Toffees after rejoining the club 12 years after he left.

Speaking at his first press conference, he said the job was “too big” to turn down, and is convinced he can help Everton challenge higher up the table again.

Moyes is back at the helm and is the first managerial appointment from new owners The Friedkin Group.

He told reporters: “It was too big an opportunity to turn down, I want to try and show that I can go again”.

He added: “It used to be that going back didn’t sound good but I went back to West Ham and we went on to win a European trophy.”

Moyes hailed Everton as a “different beast” and said it is the only club job he would have taken.

He said he has been very close to making a return in recent years, but there were various reasons why it did not happen.

“I’ve come very close to coming back on three, maybe four, occasions,” he said.

“I’ve had talks at different times and for different reasons it fell through.”

The Scot hopes to return Everton to the stability it had under his stewardship, which included reaching an FA Cup final and achieving a series of top-eight finishes.

“I’m probably coming back to a completely different Everton from the one I left a long time ago,” he said.

“It would be great if we could get it back in the same condition.

“We have to win football matches. We need to build this club back up, the damage has been done by a long period of time but at the end of it there’s an elite stadium and we need to get elite players to play.”

Moyes confirmed three of his backroom staff in the press conference.

Former Everton player Leighton Baines will move up from the Under 18s to join Moyes’ coaching staff, after taking charge of Everton’s FA Cup tie against Peterborough United on the day Sean Dyche was sacked.

He will be joined by Billy McKinlay, who worked with Moyes at West Ham, as well as Alan Irvine, who was Moyes’ assistant for part of his first spell at the club.

The Scot’s first five games back in charge of the club include four home fixtures, after the Toffees received a home draw against Bournemouth in the FA Cup fourth round.

Moyes will take charge of his first match against Aston Villa on Wednesday 15 January at Goodison Park.
