Newcastle United learn PSR fate as Premier League announces financial penalties

Newcastle United have confirmed that they have avoided any financial punishments from the Premier League. The Magpies endured a white knuckle ride last June when they were forced to sell Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh to Nottingham Forest and Brighton & Hove Albion to avoid a points deductions as per the PSR rule book.
Clubs learn today whether they are facing punishments for breaching profitability and sustainability rules [PSR] across the three-year accounting period of 2021-24. Disciplinary charges will be issued to any club to have recorded losses greater than £105m for that period, with some balance sheets submitted and checked in recent days – something Newcastle have avoided this time around.

Leicester City were the most likely team to be hit with punishments but well-placed sources in the Midlands suggest no charges will be brought against the Foxes, meaning all 20 Premier League teams look have to avoided breaches.

When asked if Newcastle were on the dreaded list of clubs, Howe, speaking at his morning press conference, said: “No, I don’t believe we are [on that list].
“The breaching of financial fair play for us was something that we fought really hard against in the summer to not be in that position – and that’s why the departures of the ones we didn’t want to happen had to happen.”
Last season Forest and Everton suffered points deductions in the Premier League with Howe admitting it was a sobering reminder of the dangers of getting finances wrong.

When asked if the club were learning all the time about the PSR rules, Howe told Chronicle Live: “I think the club were educated last year. I don’t think there was any surprise. I don’t think it was an issue, going back a couple of years that might have been different as I don’t think the clubs were fully understanding what the punishments would be.
“I think once they became apparent, that certainly got everyone thinking about the PSR situation. For us what happened last year was very difficult. It had a knock-on effect on what happened in the summer; PSR continues to affect our decision-making, whether that is a contract renewal or whatever the situation regarding our squad we have to think long and hard about making a decision we make.
“That will continue to be the case as long as the rules are the way we are. Certainly we are aware of everything and last year will serve as a good reminder.”
