Newcastle United player ratings vs Wolves: Alexander Isak flawless but 8/10 star was an unsung hero

Newcastle United’s winning streak has now extended to nine games following a 3-0 win over Wolves.
Alexander Isak was the star of the show once again as a confident Newcastle United side picked up three points at St James’ Park.

The super Swede scored twice – either side of half-time – meaning Isak has now beaten Alan Shearer’s record of scoring in consecutive games. Anthony Gordon also continued his hot streak to add to Newcastle’s lead.
Newcastle have now climbed up to fourth in the Premier League table, putting them well in contention to secure a return to the Champions League next season.

PLAYER RATINGS
Martin Dubravka – 7
Managed to block out all the noise around his future and contract talks to put in yet another impressive display between the sticks. Wolves did find the back of the net from a corner but it was disallowed for handball. Moments later, Dubravka made a stunning save to earn another well-deserved clean sheet.
Tino Livramento – 7
Never seemed to stop sprinting up and down the right flank. Picked up some great positions going forward but will be frustrated that a handful of his crosses never beat the first man. Regardless, another very solid display.
Dan Burn – 8
Dominant in almost every duel. On several occasions, Burn stepped up out of the Newcastle backline to intercept a Wolves counter-attack. It only backfired once when Matheus Cunha skipped past him and fired his shot wide. Calm in possession and sharp whenever the visitors burst forward.
Sven Botman – 7
Did very well up against a physical Strand-Larsen. Not as busy than his centre-back partner Burn but hardly put a foot wrong when under pressure. Another 90 minutes under his belt following his return from injury.
Lewis Hall – 7
The Premier League’s best left-back at the moment? It is great to see Hall growing in confidence – he burst forward whenever possible and his sharp link-up play around the box created several chances. He also did very well to keep an in-form Matheus Cunha quiet after he came off the bench.
Sandro Tonali – 7
Against a Wolves side who were happy to sit back and defend for large portions of the game, Tonali had plenty of touches on the ball which allowed him to dictate Newcastle’s tempo and provide a platform to launch attacks from. Defensively, he protected Burn and Botman superbly and continued to chase every ball even late into stoppage time.
Joelinton – 6
Powerhouse. Misplaced a few passes early on but grew in confidence as Newcastle took control of the clash. As usual, Joelinton made a number of crunching tackles and had a big impact in both boxes.
Bruno Guimaraes – 7
Had a sloppy first 20 minutes which hurt Newcastle’s tempo, but kept plugging away and found Isak with a world-class pass in the first half. Almost added a goal of his own in the second half after he was given time to line up a shot from range.
Jacob Murphy – 7
While Isak and Gordon provide an X-factor up front, Murphy thrives by getting the basics right. Provided some dangerous crosses and wasn’t afraid to pull the trigger when a chance presented itself. Unlucky not to score.
Anthony Gordon – 9
Has now scored or assisted in the last six games. Even during Newcastle’s slow start, Gordon looked lively but couldn’t quite find an end product. He continued to drop deep, pick up the ball and drive forward with some brilliant weaving runs. Capped off a brilliant display with a goal just moments before he was taken off.
Unstoppable. A deflected effort before the break and a well-taken finish after means Isak has now scored in eight consecutive games. Not only was he a constant threat and a menace for the Wolves backline, but he also helped out in defence by working back and cutting out a dangerous Wolves free-kick late in the first half.
Came close to scoring another hat-trick but had to settle for a simple assist to Gordon before being replaced by William Osula.
Substitutes
Miguel Almiron – 6
With links to the MLS growing, there is a chance this could be Almiron’s final appearance for Newcastle. Worked hard after coming on but nothing much to shout about.
Joe Willock – 5
Didn’t really make an impact after coming on to play out wide but did link up well with Miley in the final few minutes.
William Osula – 5
After scoring his first Newcastle goal against Bromley, Osula picked up some more important minutes here. However, he didn’t get a sniff at goal in the final few minutes.
Lewis Miley – 6
Deserved some minutes after a superb display against Bromley on the weekend. Added some energy in midfield during a period of the match where Newcastle had taken their foot off the gas.
Kieran Trippier – N/A
Came on for the final few minutes to a warm St James’ welcome.
