Juventus are reportedly closing in on a shock deal to sign Newcastle United outcast Lloyd Kelly.
Signed last summer from Bournemouth on a free transfer, the 26-year-old has made just four Premier League starts this season. He has not made the starting line-up in a league fixture since the 2-0 defeat to West Ham United in November.
Only one minute of top-flight action in two months has made Kelly a forgotten man at St James’ Park. Brought in for his versatility, the defender could already be heading for the Tyneside exit.
Fenerbache vice-president Acun Ilicali – who also owns Hull City – irked Eddie Howe by going public with their pursuit for Kelly. A derisory offer believed to be worth around £11million was turned down.

“Lloyd has not talked to me about leaving the Football Club,” Howe told reporters on Friday. “I think he’s only just joined and I think there’s an understanding from his perspective that he’s got to earn the right to play and prove that he deserves to play ahead of other players.

Italian sports journalist Fabrizio Romano – well connected in Serie A – is now claiming Juventus are close to a deal. He posted on social media: “Juventus have asked for Lloyd Kelly as new centre back with a verbal bid rejected by Newcastle for a loan with option-to-buy clause.
“Juventus remain interested after NUFC rejected €13million proposal from Fenerbahce this week. Juve now hope to advance for a fee of around €15million. Deal on.”
