Newcastle United have been very quiet in the January transfer window.

Three weeks since the transfer window opened, and Newcastle are still yet to make their first senior signing.

The club have been busy working on arrivals for Newcastle’s academy, however. Kyle Fitzgerald will sign his first professional contract at Newcastle in the next week. The 17-year-old will join from Irish side Galway United.

Newcastle executives also showed Georgian forward Vakhtang Salia around St James’ Park and the training ground ahead of his move to Tyneside in August.

From a first-team perspective, it has been immensely disappointing. Newcastle have missed out on the opportunity to sign several players who have since been signed by their rivals.

Abdukodir Khusanov snubbed Newcastle for Manchester City despite the Magpies feeling confident that they could get a deal done. Newcastle were offered Donyell Malen from Borussia Dortmund but decided against it. He recently signed for Aston Villa.

With Newcastle yet to splash the cash, another star who signed for his current team for an eyewatering £100m is attracting interest from several clubs.

Inter Milan and Borussia Dortmund monitoring Newcastle target Jack Grealish

Manchester City winger Jack Grealish has been very inconsistent since joining for £100m in 2021. The 29-year-old has scored 15 goals in 146 games under Pep Guardiola but is currently out of favour with the Spaniard with summer signing Savinho having a bright season.

Newcastle have monitored Grealish in recent months to gauge whether it would be worth making a move for him in January.

Now, according to The Sun, Inter Milan and Borussia Dortmund have also been keeping tabs on the England international. The report suggests that Grealish could be interested in a move to Europe over a domestic club as he eyes a fresh start elsewhere.

Grealish impressed during Man City’s FA Cup win against Salford where he scored a penalty.

Despite links away, the report states that Guardiola is willing to work with Grealish to get him back to the form that helped them win the Premier League and Champions League in recent seasons.

Newcastle should sign Grealish’s teammate

While signing Grealish would be beneficial. The winger is 29 and would most likely demand a hefty wage that Newcastle may not be able to afford.

Instead, Newcastle should sign James McAtee. The 22-year-old has impressed in brief cameos for Man City this season. McAtee scored a hat-trick in their game against Salford and bagged his first Premier League goal in Man City’s 6-0 win against Ipswich on Sunday.

Newcastle are keen on signing McAtee for around £25m in January. However, Guardiola is not willing to let him go easily.

Guardiola claims he hopes McAtee stays at Man City for ‘many years’ and admitted he was impressed with him, despite a lack of minutes in his squad.

With Newcastle keen to sign a winger in January, they should look no further than McAtee.
