Jamie Redknapp has urged the Premier League to “dramatically change” the Profit & Sustainability (PSR) regulations.
Introduced in 2015-16, the rules were established to prevent clubs from entering financial difficulty. Clubs are prohibited from recording losses of £105million over a three-year period.
Little was made about the measures until recent years, but Tottenham’s lack of spending power compared to other top-six clubs has proved a turning point.
The Spurs hierarchy – and fans – have been frustrated by not being able to compete with the likes of Chelsea, Manchester City, and Manchester United in the transfer market.
Restrictions have forced a more measured approach, with Spurs not making a major first-team signing in recent windows.
Everton and Nottingham Forest being slapped with points deductions last season also amplified the noise around PSR regulations.
Speaking to The Rest of Football podcast, Spurs icon Redknapp has called upon Premier League clubs to “get rid” of PSR.
He said: “Get rid of the PSR rules…dramatically change them. They are (competing) this season, but it’s a big but. Tottenham have come in and they have challenged the big boys. Have your say. Leave a comment below and let us know what you think.
“But over recent seasons, we have seen Spurs do that and disappear. We have seen Aston Villa do that and they’re now eighth. Would that happen to Spurs? Would they be able to go on and spend again? Look at where Bournemouth are and what they are doing.
“I’ve always said the way they are at the minute doesn’t sit easy with me because it’s not designed for anyone to come in and challenge the big boys. You might do it for one season but, after that, you’re not able to do it. Ultimately, being competitive all boils down to the finances.”
