When the PIF takeover was completed, it felt inevitable that Newcastle United’s new owners would want a new manager at the helm.
Steve Bruce recommended Eddie Howe to PIF as his replacement, as he acknowledged that his time on Tyneside was coming to an end.
Eventually, PIF listened to Bruce’s recommendation and Newcastle have now enjoyed three years with Howe as manager. He now has the opportunity to end the 70-year trophy drought in this month’s Carabao Cup final.

Paulo Fonseca faces seven-month ban
Newcastle fans will still be frustrated by Anthony Gordon’s red card against Brighton following his foolish decision to lash out in the second half of the FA Cup clash.
But it doesn’t even come close to what Lyon coach Paulo Fonseca did this week.
During his side’s 2-1 win over Brest on Sunday afternoon, Fonseca was sent off after confronting referee Benoit Millot and pushing his head towards the official.
According to French outlet RMC Sport, Fonseca is facing a seven-month suspension for his actions. He is expected to be summoned on Wednesday evening and punished immediately.

When PIF were looking for a new manager, it seemed for a while the Fonseca was actually the favourite.
Fonseca impressed Amanda Staveley in his interview, and a report from The Telegraph claimed Newcastle were ready to table a £6m-per-season contract to the Portuguese coach.
Eventually, PIF turned their attention elsewhere – notably to Eddie Howe and Unai Emery – but Fonseca was “very close” to joining Newcastle.

Newcastle fans were excited by Fonseca, but there will be no complaints from supporters about the progress Howe has made at St James’ Park.
Plus, Fonseca’s outburst is something Newcastle could very much do without. Howe is a calm and composed on the touchline, and that is the kind of leader the club needs.
