Neal Maupay has hit back at Paul Scholes after the former Manchester United midfielder criticised him for “taking the p**s”.
Maupay found himself at the unlikely centre of a storm during a debate on The Overlap regarding players celebrating.
The panel had been discussing Myles Lewis-Skelly’s celebration from Arsenal’s 5-1 victory over Manchester City earlier this month – a move that was interpreted as a dig at Erling Haaland.
Sticking up for the youngster, a panel member asked Paul Scholes and Jamie Carragher: “What’s the difference between that and Maddison doing the darts thing though.”

They had instead meant Maupay imitating Spurs ace Maddison with his signature darts celebration after scoring a goal away to the north Londoners last season.
After the initial confusion about what was being referred to was cleared up, Scholes chimed in with: “He’s an idiot… he just takes the p**s doesn’t he?”
It was received with laughs inside the studio, but it was on social media where the comment garnered the most traction.
So much so, Maupay himself got in on the action, with his official X account releasing a post saying: “Surprised Paul Scholes can fit my name in his mouth alongside his daughter’s toes,” accompanied by a foot emoji.

The former Brentford forward was referencing a viral social media clip from 2021 that appeared to show Scholes biting his daughter’s toenails.
It comes after weeks of celebration-related discourse on the back of the Arsenal vs City contest, with Carragher among the ex-pros to have blasted Lewis-Skelly for mocking Haaland after scoring.
