Anthony Gordon says £43m star is not right for Newcastle United after Eddie Howe tried to sign him

Eddie Howe came close to signing a Premier League star during his first ever transfer window as Newcastle United manager.
When Eddie Howe joined Newcastle United in November 2021, there was only one thing on the mind of everyone at St James’ Park – to survive.

A poor start to the season under Steve Bruce left Newcastle in the relegation zone, but Howe quickly steered the Magpies clear of safety.
PIF had just completed their Newcastle takeover and were prepared to back Howe in his first transfer window. Newcastle completed five major signings, including the £40m deal for Bruno Guimaraes.
Chris Wood, Dan Burn and Kieran Trippier also arrived at St James’ Park, while Matt Targett joined on loan.
However, Newcastle also had an offer rejected for a certain Cole Palmer.

Eddie Howe tried to sign Cole Palmer in 2021
In December 2021, reports claimed that Manchester City rejected Newcastle’s Cole Palmer offer with Howe eager to take the then 19-year-old on loan.
At the time, Palmer was trying to break into City’s first-team squad under Pep Guardiola, and Newcastle were willing to offer regular game time to the teenager.
Eventually, Palmer made a £43m move to Chelsea in 2023 and he has since become one of the Premier League’s star players.
Palmer has scored 14 goals for Chelsea this season and ended the 2023/24 season with 27 goals and 15 assists across all competitions.
Newcastle target Tyler Dibling has been compared to Palmer amid talk of a potential summer move for the Southampton star.
Anthony Gordon thinks Cole Palmer wouldn’t fit at Newcastle
Back in June, Anthony Gordon wanted Marc Guehi to sign for Newcastle amid reports that the Crystal Palace star could be on the way to Tyneside.
However, when Gordon was asked which England teammate he wants to bring to St James’ Park, Guehi wasn’t the first name that popped into his head.
Instead, Gordon picked Palmer before immediately suggesting that he doesn’t particularly suit Howe’s style of play.
“Trying to think of this logically, because I don’t want to displace anyone. Right now I’d probably go Cole [Palmer],” Gordon said.

“I don’t think he’d suit our style of play at all because we play a pressing style of play, but I think his quality and what he’s doing at the minute – I’d probably pick Cole.”
Newcastle want to improve their midfield in 2025, but it’s fair to say that a dream move for Palmer can be ruled out immediately.
