Andy Madley pointed to the spot before changing his decision after watching the incident on the VAR monitor.
Fans have all made the same point after Everton had a controversial last-gap penalty overturned against Manchester United.
Everton were 2-0 up and flying in the first half courtesy of goals from Beto and Abdoulaye Doucoure but United pulled level in the second half courtesy of fine strikes from Bruno Fernandes and Manuel Ugarte.
In a frenetic finale, Andy Madley pointed to the spot for a last-minute Everton penalty after Ashley Young appeared to be fouled on the rebound when Andre Onana spilled Idrissa Gueye’s effort.
Young looked like he was pulled back by both Matthijs de Ligt and Harry Maguire but in a lengthy delay, the referee was encouraged to watch the incident on the VAR monitor.
After watching the screen, Madley then changed his mind to completely reverse his decision and cancel the penalty – much to the frustration of Everton players and fans alike.
Penalties are overturned in the case of a clear and obvious but many fans on X were adamant that the wrong decision was reached and claimed that the correct angles were not shown.
One said: “Penalty all day. 2 United defenders pull him down in the box. VAR showing the ref the wrong angles to get it taken away.”
A second said: “The VAR got this wrong! That was a clear penalty. Why didn’t they show the referee different angles?”
A third fumed: WTF is wrong with VAR. Those guys are just confused fools with technology. How can you have access to all those angles and still recommend the ref to the screen and show him just 1 angle where the foul wasn’t clear. Everton have been wronged big time.”
A fourth added: “That was disgusting from VAR not showing all the angles for what should have been a penalty for Young.”
A final user agreed: “VAR showing the ref all the wrong angles where it looks like there’s not enough contact. Such a broken system.”
Ruben Amorim did not want to discuss the penalty in detail in his post-match interview but said it was a “soft touch”.
The incident could well be analysed by referee chief Howard Webb on the ‘Match Officials Mic’d Up’ show with Michael Owen, featuring dialogue from the referee and those in the VAR room.
With the point shared at Goodison Park, Everton remain in 12th while United are still stuck in 15th after taking just 15 points from a possible 45 under Amorim.
