Spurs vs Hammers: Tottenham NOT backing down

The defensive depth at Tottenham Hotspur has been brutally tested in the ongoing campaign, with Ange Postecoglou having to deal with a lot of injury concerns.

Due to key stars at the back dropping out like flies, the Australian head coach had to be creative and deploy players in makeshift roles for the best part of the last three months. The North Londoners did try to dip into the winter transfer market to bring in a new centre-back, and while Daniel Levy pursued a move for multiple players, he ended up bringing in Kevin Danso on a loan-to-obligation-buy deal from RC Lens.

While Danso’s signing is proving to be a decent one albeit evaluating his performances from a small sample size of games, Spurs will rather make a marquee investment in the upcoming summer as they eye further defensive reinforcements after an injury-hit campaign.

According to a report from Italian outlet TV Play, Tottenham are set to battle London rivals West Ham United for the signing of Juventus defender Federico Gatti. Juventus want to raise funds for their own summer transfer plans and are ready to part ways with the centre-back, slapping a price tag of around €20 million on his head.

Having signed from Frosinone in 2022, Federico Gatti has performed well in the last two campaigns for Juventus. He became a regular at the back last season, racking up 32 appearances in Serie A. The five-cap Italy international has been robust for Thiago Motta’s side this season, although the team have lacked consistency and were dumped out of the Champions League by PSV Eindhoven earlier this week.

Perhaps a surprising decision taken by the Turin-based club’s chiefs, Gatti is set to be sacrificed in order to boost the summer’s transfer kitty for the manager to reinforce different areas of the pitch. And Tottenham could take advantage of Juventus’ situation by bringing Gatti to North London.

Valued at just around €20 million, Tottenham must do everything within their powers to beat West Ham to Gatti’s signature. Should the Lilywhites manage to lure the Juventus star to N17, it would also be a huge headline signing that would show the belief in the project that Daniel Levy is overseeing at White Hart Lane.
