Paul Merson says one team could get battered in Liverpool vs Newcastle United prediction

Paul Merson has sent a warning to Newcastle United ahead of facing Liverpool on Wednesday night.
The Magpies head to Anfield for a preview of the Carabao Cup final, but this time Eddie Howe and Arne Slot will be battling for Premier League points rather than silverware.
The Carabao Cup final is merely an interesting subplot, as Newcastle United travel to a stadium where they have not won in the league since April 1994.
The odds are stacked against the Magpies, with Chris Sutton backing Liverpool to win.
That feeling is shared by Paul Merson, who has told Sportskeeda that he thinks Liverpool will be victorious against Newcastle United on Wednesday night.
In fact, he has warned Eddie Howe’s side that they could get battered if they play like they did against Nottingham Forest on Sunday.

“Newcastle started poorly the other day before being rampant for 12 minutes and securing a big lead,” he said.
“After all that, they almost allowed Forest to get back into that game in a crazy 4-3 result. If Newcastle allow this game to become a similar, ‘I have a shot, you have a shot’ affair, I think Liverpool will batter them!
“I really believe Liverpool don’t get enough credit. They are a phenomenal team and made City look average on Sunday. This team is so entertaining and will be deserved winners this season.
“If they win this game and Arsenal lose like I predicted, they can easily start resting players in the league to focus on the Champions League. That could make a massive difference to their aspirations in Europe.”

Eddie Howe’s record away to Liverpool
Since becoming Newcastle United manager, Eddie Howe has never beaten Liverpool – home or away.
Paul Merson does not think that will change on Wednesday night, as the Magpies aim to derail Liverpool’s title bid.
In truth, everything is against Newcastle. Liverpool are an unstoppable force this season, with Arne Slot’s side 11 points clear at the top of the table. Meanwhile, Newcastle remain inconsistent.
The Magpies’ record against Liverpool is poor, particularly at Anfield. It is almost 31 years since Newcastle United last won a league game there.
Eddie Howe’s overall record at Anfield is not much better either. Whether it has been at Newcastle or as Bournemouth boss, Howe has never beaten Liverpool away. His record is one draw and eight defeats.
Newcastle United are going to be massive underdogs on Wednesday night, but stranger things can happen. And a win away to Liverpool would do wonders for Newcastle’s confidence ahead of the Carabao Cup final on March 16th.
