Marco Asensio has made a big impression early into his loan spell with Aston Villa – but it would appear as though he has little future back at parent club Paris Saint Germain. Asensio has scored four goals in two Villa Park outings against Chelsea and Cardiff City in the space of seven days and has combined well with Marcus Rashford in that time.
Asensio, 29, has another year remaining on his contract with PSG from this coming summer onwards, but it’s expected that he is going to be available for a permanent transfer at the end of the season.
The former Real Madrid star, who has 38 caps for his country, fell out of favour under Luis Enrique earlier this season and he was granted a move away in the winter window. He made only 12 league appearances this season but 620 minutes of football and Enrique has preferred others.
When asked towards the end of 2024 about Asesnsio and dropping out of the team, Enrique was coy but sent a rather pointed message that he selected players based on performance and work-rate.
“My decisions speak much better than what I think of each player at each moment,” he said. “I always say the same thing, I make decisions based on what I see in the competition and in training.
“Obviously the players who don’t play don’t agree , but that’s the role I have to play as a coach. I always say that there is no situation that can’t be changed, but today the decisions are those and I have nothing to explain.”
Villa, who have the option to sign Rashford for £40m from Manchester United in the summer, are likely to be in the market for Asensio in the summer, although European football is likely to be something Asensio demands.
