Bruno Guimaraes has shouldered the blame for Newcastle United’s FA Cup exit while rallying supporters for next month’s final.

The Brazilian came on midway through the second half as the Magpies crashed out against Brighton yesterday. A surprise defeat – which saw Newcastle take the lead on 22 minutes through Alexander Isak – ended their hopes in one cup competition.

However, the Magpies are in the final of another, the Carabao Cup, and face Liverpool at Wembley on March 16. They must take on the Premier League leaders without talisman Anthony Gordon after he was sent off against Brighton.

The Toon ace lashed out at Jan paul van Hecke in a moment of madness – despite the whistle already being blown for offside. Guimaraes has refused to let his Newcastle teammate come under fire by asking supporters to “blame” him for the Brighton defeat.

Writing on social media, the captain also urged fans to stick together as they prepare to end the club’s 70-year wait without domestic silverware. Guimaraes posted: “(I am) disappointed not to progress in the FA Cup as it was clearly one of our goals.

“Moments like this are when we need to stick together the most. I know that, when eliminations like this happen, it’s hard to accept and we always look for someone to blame. If you need to find one, you can blame me.

“We have two weeks before one of the most important games for the club in recent years, and we must be ready for this great opportunity. My only request is that, in this moment, we stay united as one and go after the best for the club because we still have great things ahead.”
