Wolves’ world was rocked last weekend, as Matheus Cunha was sent off for losing his head in a confrontation with Milos Kerkez.

Cunha was slapped with a suspension, expected to be at least a three-matches, forcing Vitor Pereira into preparing without his most important player.

Despite letting his team down in that moment of chaos, he’s shown why a £62.5 million release clause has been inserted in Cunha’s contract after scoring 15 goals in all competitions.

It’s impossible to replace someone of the 25-year-old’s quality with the likes of Goncalo Guedes, Hwang Hee-chan and Jorgen Strand Larsen needing to step up.

However, Everton boss David Moyes believes they have to find a way, making a comparison to the injuries they’ve suffered.

David Moyes compares Matheus Cunha to Dominic Calvert-Lewin

Speaking ahead of their visit to Molineux, Moyes didn’t have any sympathy for Wolves as the Toffees have lost important players themselves, using Dominic Calvert-Lewin as an example.

“I think they’ve done a really good job at Wolves and I think they’ve got themselves back on track,” Moyes said. “I think they’ve played well in a few games, they had a really good win at Bournemouth the week before the cup,” Moyes said in his press conference.

“They ran them close in the cup game as well, but obviously, they lose a really important player for them. But we’ve lost really important players as well, you look at Dominic [Calvert-Lewin] out the team, so we’ve adapted to the situation as well. It’s a part of football nowadays that you get injuries, so you have to find a few ways of coping without them.”

The comment he made on Calvert-Lewin will have annoyed some Wolves fans, as the Brazilian is levels ahead of the Everton striker, both in terms of quality and importance.

How Cunha compares to Calvert-Lewin

There’s a reason why so many big clubs are chasing a transfer for Cunha, as he’s more than just a centre-forward. He has the technical attributes to unlock defences, the power to drive forward at pace and an incredible ability to finish chances.

Calvert-Lewin, on the other hand, is mainly just a target man striker whose finishing has often been criticised by the mainstream media and those in the fanbase.

As demonstrated by the above table, Cunha is levels ahead and irreplaceable to Wolves, whereas Calvert-Lewin is easily replaced, as seen by the emergence of Beto.

So, when Moyes spoke about adapting without the English striker, it was an undoubtedly easier task than the one facing Pereira.
