Granted it may have become a tad diluted in recent seasons due to Celtic’s total domination in the Scottish football landscape while Brendan Rodgers’ record vs Rangers even leaves the term ‘rivalry’ up for debate.

But it is certainly a fixture everyone in the country looks forward to in the calendar with pundits and former players down south and elsewhere also keeping a close eye on Glasgow when the clash rolls around.

There have been plenty of big names who have played in the game over the years and some who perhaps took it too lightly and learned quickly just how frantic it can be.

However, there are other superstars from throughout the years in the sport who wish they’d have played in the Glasgow derby to experience exactly what it was really like.

Paul Ince

“In all the derby games I have played in, the one I would love to play in is Celtic and Rangers. For which club? At the moment, Celtic,” he told BT Sport.

“This is a shirt I got when I played in a friendly against them for West Ham, towards the end of my West Ham career, at Celtic Park. I kept the shirt. And I’ll be wearing it on January 2nd, next year for the Glasgow Derby.

“I’ll be going 100 percent. I would’ve loved to play for Celtic. A little regret of mine towards the end of my career, and I had a fantastic time at Cardiff City, but if social media had been about then I’d have been able to tell Celtic I was a big fan and I think that move would’ve happened.”

Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink

“I would’ve loved to have played in Scotland during my career and I came close to playing for both Rangers and Celtic.

“First it was Rangers who came in for me when Dick Advocaat was at the club but it didn’t quite happen. Then Celtic came in but it never materialised.”

Peter Crouch could have played in derby for Rangers under Steven Gerrard

“I would have liked to have come up here, definitely, play in an Old Firm game, I would have loved to have been a part of that. It just didn’t materialise. I didn’t want to come up here half-hearted.

“In my early 30s I would have liked to come here and given it a go and done it properly, but it wasn’t to be.”

“I’m going to Celtic, I’d loved to play for Celtic.”

“I’ve been to them all, and obviously played in Newcastle vs Sunderland. But the Glasgow derby looks very interesting, very tasty.

“I actually spoke to Martin O’Neill twice about moving to Celtic a few years ago when I thought I might be leaving Newcastle.

“What if? Nah, I never look back. I lived my dream, I was a lucky lad.”
