It has been an incredible few days for the Newcastle United midfielder.
Bruno lifted the Carabao Cup at Wembley alongside Kieran Trippier and Jamaal Lascelles on Sunday, as he played a pivotal role in the Magpies ending their trophy drought.
Bruno wrote his name in the club’s history, cementing his legacy at St James’ Park.
But the hard work does not stop, as the 27-year-old’s cup celebrations were cut short. He is now part of the Brazil squad alongside Toon teammate Joelinton, as they continue their World Cup qualifying campaign.
‘Sad’ night for Bruno Guimaraes despite Brazil victory
Brazil were victorious in the very early hours of Friday morning, beating Colombia 2-1 thanks to a 99th minute winner from Vinicius Junior.
Raphinha opened the scoring for the Selecao, only for Luis Diaz to draw Colombia level before half-time. However, Diaz would go on to lose, just as he did for Liverpool at Wembley on Sunday.
Bruno Guimaraes started in midfield for Brazil, playing 78 minutes for his country. He was then replaced by Wolves midfielder Andre, after picking up a booking.
That booking means he is now suspended for Brazil’s next game, which is against Argentina in the early hours of Wednesday morning.
While Bruno was delighted to beat Colombia, he has admitted on Instagram that he is ‘sad’ about missing the Argentina game.
He wrote on Instagram after the game: “A very important win. In the grip, in the will and in the sweat with the Brazilian style. Thank you Brasília for your support. It sure made a difference for us. We follow for more. Sad to be out of the next game but for sure I will be a fan of our national team.”
While Bruno is gutted to be suspended for Brazil’s next game, there will likely be delight on Tyneside.
It means he will have additional time to rest before Newcastle United’s next game, which is at home to Brentford on April 2nd.
Brazilian media’s verdict on Bruno Guimaraes’ performance
It was a decent performance from the Newcastle United captain, on a night where Brazil had to rely on the latest of winners from Vinicius.
For Bruno, he was actually one of Brazil’s highest rated players.
Globo Esporte gave their highest rating of 7.5/10 to Vinicius, which is no surprise after his winner. After the Real Madrid superstar, 7/10s were awarded to Raphinha and Wesley.
The next highest was Bruno, who was given a 6/10 by Globo Esporte – as well as a few other of his Brazilian teammates.
On Bruno, Globo wrote: “He made the game clearer with good side changes and throws. At 15, he arrived late, committed a foul near the Colombian area and received a card that will keep him out of the derby against Argentina. He made a good individual play at the beginning of the second half, but after that he didn’t appear much and was substituted.”
Goal gave Bruno the same score of 6/10, writing: “Solid in the middle of the park as normal, but was overwhelmed at times by Colombia’s press. His partnership with Joelinton felt more natural after Gerson’s departure, but that was expected for the Newcastle duo.”
