It has been a remarkable week for Dan Burn. He scored at Wembley as Newcastle United won the Carabao Cup on Sunday, ending the Magpies’ trophy drought. Burn’s goal was Newcastle’s first at Wembley since 2000.
That incredible high was followed by the 32-year-old linking up with the Three Lions, with Thomas Tuchel naming Burn in his first England squad.
Tuchel then named Burn in his first starting lineup, as England began their 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign with a 2-0 win over Albania.

Burn started at centre-back alongside Aston Villa’s Ezri Konsa, and played very well.
It was a commanding performance from the giant defender, and he almost marked his England debut with a goal. He rattled the crossbar with a header in the first half, as he proved to be a constant threat from set pieces.
But he was unable to find the net, and Roy Keane told ITV that the 6ft 7in man should get on the scoresheet more often.

“He’s obviously going to get his head on it,” he said.
“We’re surprised he doesn’t score more goals. He’s obviously a threat.
“It’s quite a simple ball in there, put into the right area and he’s attacking it. Obviously his confidence is sky high, but he probably should score more goals.”
When you consider Burn’s height and power, it is remarkable that he does not score more goals from set pieces.
But he scored when it mattered, powering home Kieran Trippier’s corner to give the Magpies the lead at Wembley in the 2025 Carabao Cup final. If he never scores another goal in his career, he will not be concerned.
It was his first goal of the season, and the seventh of his entire Newcastle United career after joining the club from Brighton for £13million in January 2022.
During his entire career, Burn has scored 22 goals. His most prolific season came when he was at Wigan Athletic, finding the net six times during the 2017/18 campaign.
