KASPER SCHMEICHEL is a major injury worry for Celtic after he was taken to hospital following Denmark’s clash against Portugal.

The Hoops No1 played the full 90 minutes plus extra time as the Danes lost 5-2 to the Portuguese in their Nations League quarter-final tie.

Celts star Schmeichel, 38, saved a penalty from Cristiano Ronaldo in the first half but suffered an injury later on in the game.

However, he wasn’t able to be subbed because by that point, Danish head coach Brian Riemer had used up all his substituions.

According to Tipsbladet, Schmeichel was spotted this morning with his left arm in a sling near Lisbon Airport.

It’s understood Schmeichel sustained the injury in stopping a chance for striker Diogo Jota but he bravely continued despite being in pain.

Riemer insisted he would have taken Schmeichel off if he could: “It’s 100 percent certain, he was injured. But we didn’t have any more substitutions left.

“We talked about whether we should take him out. He didn’t want to go out himself, and as long as he can stand in goal, it’s an advantage to be 11.

“But if we could have put a new goalkeeper in, it would have been in place.

“I haven’t watched it all, but I think Schmeichel makes some fantastic saves, including a penalty.

“Overall I think he delivered a fine performance.”

The news will come as a bitter blow to Hoops boss Brendan Rodgers, how has relied on Schmeichel this year.

The Denmark national squad’s doctor, Morten Boesen, has tried to allay fears however.

He said: “Kasper Schmeichel’s left shoulder was X-rayed last night and fortunately the images do not show anything abnormal.

“He is clearly in pain after a fall on his shoulder, so we are examining him further with an MRI scan.”

Schmeichel’s team mate, Brentford star Christian Norgaard, was amazed that not only did Schmeichel refuse to come off but that he continued to make saves – calling him a SUPERHERO.

He said: “We had a goalkeeper out there who was like a superhero from another world.

“He runs around with one arm and yet he makes an incredible save.

“I’m disappointed, but there’s also a proud feeling of having given one of the best teams in the world a fight to the finish. But that’s probably the biggest disappointment right now.”

Summer signing Viljami Sinisalo has made just one appearance this season and that came in a 5-0 Scottish Cup win over Raith Rovers.

Long-time backup Scott Bain is the third choice ‘keeper.

Celtic return to Premiership action this weekend against Hearts and are expected to welcome back captain Callum McGregor for that one, after he missed the Glasgow derby defeat against Rangers.
