Indeed, Newcastle tried a last-ditch attempt to sign the former Manchester United man on deadline day in the summer with a desperate £50 million bid that was rejected by the Premier League’s surprise package this season.
Even before that, the Magpies had tried to include Elanga in the deal, which took fan-favourite Elliot Anderson to the East Midlands, with Newcastle ultimately settling on taking Odysseas Vlachodimos for £20 million. It still stings almost a year later.
Elanga had a slow start to the season which gave Newcastle fans hope that we’d dodged an expensive bullet, but his form has certainly picked up through the season as Forest have gone from strength to strength.

Along with Alexander Isak, Anthony Elanga is on international duty with Sweden and the Nottingham Forest star was speaking to the media when he was asked about the interest from Newcastle United. Elanga told Fotbollskanlen that he’s only focused on one club right now.
“If I have a good season there will always be teams that want to talk.
“But right now I’m in Nottingham and I’m happy there.”

We were hardly expecting him to say much more than that, but we imagine that he will be assessing his options.
However, with Nottingham Forest doing so well this season and Champions League football in touching distance, it’s going to be difficult for anyone to prise their players away this summer.
Elanga is just one of many wingers on Newcastle’s wishlist with Bryan Mbeumo believed to be the top target on the list with a report yesterday suggesting the Magpies are ready to cave to Brentford’s demands to make the move happen.
