Newcastle United defender Dan Burn was on the bench for the England World Cup qualifier against Latvia. The move comes just days after he won his first cap against Albania.
Burn dropped out of the starting XI as manager Thomas Tuchel rang the changes for his side’s second game in three days. Newcastle transfer target Marc Guehi instead got the nod ahead of the Blyth-born defender at centre-back.
Burn had enjoyed a solid first game for his country, capping off a whirlwind week in which he scored in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley. He almost repeated the trick back at the famous stadium, seeing his first-half header against Albania cannon off the crossbar.
Burn ended the match with a remarkable 154 touches while also making 137 passes. However, he was put under more pressure in the second half as Albania attacked through Armando Broja, the Everton striker on loan from Chelsea.
Speaking in his pre-match media briefing, Tuchel insisted no player was being axed because of how they played on Friday night. Instead, he said changes would be made due to advice from the medical and physical performance analysts.
He said: “We have reasons to let all of them play again and say ‘let’s do better’, but we also have reports from the physical department of some concerns. We need to be cautious.

“We have two or three players who felt their legs after the match but let’s see. We have quite some time. No one will be dropped from a performance point of view but if we have fresh legs available we are not afraid to do it.”
Speaking exclusively to ChronicleLive after the Albania game, Burn admitted he had felt a bit tired in the second half. The big defender was turned on a couple of occasions by Broja as he got tight aggressively as Tuchel has wanted from his players.
He said: “It was a great day for me on Friday to make my England debut but it has just been a great week. I think the adrenalin carried me through the game at times because it has been a pretty quick turnaround.
“I felt pretty calm throughout and I wasn’t nervous. I was just looking forward to it. The second half I tired a little bit so my performance dipped a little bit so I was disappointed. But all round I could not have asked for more.”
The decision to leave Burn on the bench means that none of the three Newcastle players called up to the squad start against Latvia. Anthony Gordon has already been sent home after injuring his hip against Albania, while Tuchel opted to leave Tino Livramento out of his squad. The England boss can only name 23 players for the game, and Livramento plus goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale were left out, along with Gordon, from the 26-man squad.
Newcastle boss Eddie Howe will be hoping Burn, Livramento and the other players on international duty all return unscathed ahead of the Premier League game against Brentford on April 2. Sandro Tonali was reported as looking fatigued in Italy’s clash against Germany on Sunday night.
