The young Geordie has had a fantastic season after breaking into the Magpies’ starting XI during the 2023/24 campaign. He was a fresh talent then but it is clear now that he is in with a big chance of becoming a regular starter for Newcastle United in the near future.
Lewis Miley is officially a trophy-winner at Newcastle thanks to his involvement in their Carabao Cup-winning campaign which saw them beat Liverpool at Wembley to end their agonising wait for silverware. The 18-year-old played twice in the competition, coming off the bench against Chelsea and Arsenal respectively.
Despite his quick comeuppance, Eddie Howe knows Newcastle must protect Miley and be aware that he is still growing and must ensure he continues progressing in an environment that works for him.
His good form means it’s no surprise that he has received a call-up to England’s under-19 squad alongside the likes of Chris Rigg, who has been linked with a move from Newcastle to Sunderland in the last year.
While he continues to impress, Miley has now done something that Howe is sure to love.
Lewis Miley captains England U19s against Turkey
Miley played all 90 minutes against Wales last Wednesday, helping his side to a 2-0 win in the under-19s European Championship qualifiers.
Miley has been compared to Cesc Fabregas in the past, he can now say he has done something similar to the Spanish midfielder after he captained England during a 0-0 draw against Turkey on Saturday. The midfielder played the full 90 minutes but failed to make a big enough impact to change the scoreline.
In the game, Newcastle target Tyler Dibling came off the bench, giving fans an insight into what they could soon see at St James’ Park.
Pat Nevin said Miley has the ‘world at his feet’, it’s obvious how true that statement is given what he has achieved in such a short career.
Miley has also played for England’s under-21s in the past but will likely feature for the under-19s if they qualify for the European Championship given his age.
Eddie Howe will love how Lewis Miley is developing
Being named captain of your national team is a big achievement, no matter what level you play at. Miley will no doubt hope to emulate the same feat of Newcastle legend Alan Shearer and become captain of England’s senior team one day.
Howe will surely be pleased to see just how quickly Miley is developing, the midfielder was brought into Newcastle’s first-team squad at just 16 and looked comfortable in his debut against Chelsea at the end of the 2022/23 season.
Miley is pleased to play alongside quality players at Newcastle, he couldn’t believe he gets to train alongside the likes of Alexander Isak daily.
The sky is certainly the limit for the youngster, Howe and his coaching team will recognise that as well.
