Callum Wilson feels that Newcastle United’s Carabao Cup victory over Liverpool was very much a squad achievement.
The no.9 was injured when the competition started in earnest away to Nottingham Forest while players like Will Osula, Lewis Hall and Matt Targett also played their part on the road to Wembley but were not involved on the field during the final showpiece. Injury-stricken left-back Hall missed out on the Carabao Cup celebrations in the capital but Wilson felt it was important to pay tribute to each and every squad member.
Newcastle ace Wilson said: “Everybody played a part. Even the players in the earlier rounds who got us here. Unfortunately, Lewis Hall, a great player for us this season, didn’t get to share the occasion, but we did it today for the fans.
“There were periods when we were progressing through the rounds and, unfortunately, I wasn’t able to take part. I was wishing the lads well while hoping we get to a final. When you’re sweating away, grafting, putting in the work, nobody’s watching. These are the moments you think about.”
Wilson has been at the club since 2019, when he joined a very different United as the Magpies battled against relegation under Steve Bruce. But he emerged smiling with a medal at Wembley, and said: “We’ve all dug in over the period of time when we’ve been fighting relegation and scrambling at the bottom. It was goosebumps (when looking at the Newcastle fans). When we scored, the hairs on your arms stood up.”
The celebrations continue with an event at the Town Moor coming this weekend and the players and supporters are determined to make the most of every moment. Wilson said: “Ultimately, the fans deserve this. It was 70 years in the making and thankfully we’ve got the club over the line. Hopefully, this is the first of many. We want to keep building on this.
“This feeling, what we have now, we want to create it time and time again. Two years ago we failed – now we were successful and hopefully there’s many more times (like this) to come.”
