There are a number of ways to make money, such as selling players and merchandise sales, but one of the simplest methods is matchday yields. Just having fans turning up and paying to watch a team play football can have a massive impact on their financial situation.

Some clubs have benefitted greatly from loyal fanbases who have accumatively spent millions watching their favourite team win, lose or draw. A recent European Club Finance and Investment Landscape report by UEFA has offered an insight into which British football clubs have made the most money in terms of gate revenue on matchdays.

10 Newcastle United

No matter the club’s situation, Newcastle United have always been blessed with a passionate fanbase that has turned out in droves each and every week to watch the Magpies play. St. James’ Park is regularly filled to the rafters and the supporters have been rewarded with a fantastic team over the last few seasons.

From Champions League football to their first trophy in 70 years, it’s currently one of the strongest periods in Newcastle history and they have plenty of fans watching on from the stands. Their new owners have made them very rich, but they’re also making over £1.5m in matchday revenue every home game.

9 Rangers

One of the biggest clubs in Scotland, it’s not surprising to see Rangers featuring so highly on this list. The Glaswegian side are one of the most successful of all time and have a massive fanbase that stretches far beyond Scotland. Ibrox is always buzzing and Rangers make £1.61m in matchday revenue during every single home game.

The last few years have seen them fall behind Celtic in terms of their performances on the pitch and their trophy returns, but the two sides still can’t be separated in terms of their matchday yields and their fellow Scottish powerhouses are up next.

8 Celtic

For the longest time Scotland football has been dominated by Rangers and Celtic, so it shouldn’t be too surprising to see that the Hoops are tied with their rivals in terms of matchday revenue. They dwarf any other fanbase in the country, but have loyal supporters all over the globe, helping them dominate the Scottish Premiership.

Celtic Park is renowned for having one of the best atmospheres in football and it’s due to the incredible fans that pack that ground out every week. As such, the side benefit from feeling the roar of their supporters getting behind them, but they also rake in a very pretty penny of £1.61m every home game in the process. Not bad.

7 West Ham United

Average gate yield per home match: €2.3m (£1.92m)

In terms of British clubs, no one makes more money per home game outside of the traditional ‘big six’ than West Ham United. The Hammers have made some big strides on the pitch in recent years to try and compete with the big boys at the top of England. They have lifted the Europa Conference League, spent plenty of money and even hired Graham Potter.

They’ve got a fanbase who deserves to see success, though, and with the Olympic Stadium regularly packed with West Ham fans, they are raking in plenty of money every single time they play at home.

6 Chelsea

The first of the ‘big six’ to make it onto the list, Chelsea haven’t had the best of times on the pitch in the last few years. Disappointing transfers and low finishes in the Premier League table have seen standards slip well below what’s usually been expected from the side throughout the 21st century.

Still, despite their issues, the Blues’ fans have been showing out for the team and they made £2.44m every single home game during 2024. With recent talks about building a new stadium far bigger than Stamford Bridge in the future, Chelsea might find themselves making much more than this on a regular basis somewhere down the line.

5 Manchester City

2024 was a banner year for Manchester City as they won their record-breaking fourth straight Premier League title. It was an incredible achievement that further highlighted the work that Pep Guardiola has done to turn the side into the most dominant in the top tier’s history. They weren’t without their issues, though, as the threat of their 115 charges and a potential punishment weighed over them and their form on the pitch took a major nosedive.

4 Liverpool

2024 saw Liverpool wave goodbye to their iconic manager, Jurgen Klopp, and replace him with the relatively unproven Arne Slot. That transition couldn’t have gone much better so far, though, as they look to be on course to win just their second ever Premier League title in the Dutchman’s maiden campaign.

From the months leading up to Klopp’s departure, to the side finding form early under Slot, Liverpool fans have been finely representing the club and showing up week after week at Anfield to watch their heroes. 3 Manchester United

Average gate yield per home match: €5.2m (£4.38m)

Manchester United have had their fair share of financial troubles recently. It’s no secret and Sir Jim Ratcliffe has been brutally honest about the club’s situation, taking a number of different cost-cutting measures with the Red Devils to try and save some money. One area where they aren’t struggling to earn cash, though, is their matchday revenue.

Old Trafford may have seen better days, and if reports are to be believed, it won’t be long before United are upgrading their ground, but it’s still packed out every single week with the club’s fanbase. They made £4.38m for each home game in 2024. Not bad at all.

2 Tottenham Hotspur

If you ask football fans, the majority of them wouldn’t class Tottenham Hotspur as being quite on the same level as the rest of the Premier League’s ‘big six’. They don’t have the trophy cabinets, the worldwide superstars or the reputation that the others possess, but that hasn’t stopped them from being one of the highest earners in terms of matchday revenue throughout 2024.

In their state-of-the-art stadium, considered one of the best in the world, the north London side were raking it in throughout the calendar year as fans packed the venue out week after week. They made just shy of £5m for every single home game. They just need Daniel Levy to reinvest some of that money into turning their fortunes on the pitch around now.

1 Arsenal

Average gate yield per home match: €6.1m (£5.14m)

No British club made more money in matchday revenue than Arsenal in 2024 and that’s hardly surprising. The Emirates Stadium is a work of art and the Gunners are fortunate enough to have a rabid fanbase piling into the ground every week to watch Mikel Arteta’s men compete at the top of the Premier League.

They haven’t been rewarded for their loyalty with a trophy in the last few years, but Arsenal have made some great strides to return to the top of English football after a period of struggles. They are the only British club to make more than £5m in matchday revenue throughout 2024.
